Mae Willie (Norman) Mitchell was the youngest of four children born to the late George and Ellen (Miller) Norman on March 24, 1919, in the community of Subline, Texas. The family later moved to Yoakum, Texas .She professed her hope in Christ at an early age and was very active in church from her youth and throughout her entire life.
Mae Willie attended Yoakum Colored High School. Her favorite class was Homemaking, taught by Mrs. Sarah Ann Wilson. She along with childhood friend Archie Marie Dow McClurewere often selected to cook and serve at the School Board once each year. While living in Yoakum, Texas, Mae Willie was a member of the St. James A.M.E. Church. She married Avant Cullen Graham and to this union two children were born, Barbara Jean and Theodric Bernard.
Mae later moved to San Antonio and married Bishop Bailey and became the loving step-mother to Patricia Bailey. They were members of Grant Memorial A.M.E. Church. After the passing of Bishop Bailey and many years later, she married Deacon F.G. Mitchell and was baptized by the late Rev. Claude Black becoming a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church serving as a Deaconess and enjoyed working in the Mission and Sunday Schooldepartment. After the death of Mr. Mitchell, she became an active member of Calvary Baptist Church to worship with her son and family members. She continued her work as a dedicated Deaconess and attended Sunday School. After her son Deacon Theodric Bernard passed away, she joined Second Baptist Church to worship with her daughter Barbara, grandson Deacon Randy Bernard Reed and other family members. Mae attended Sunday School Class #4 and enjoyed worship service until her health declined the later months of her life. She spoke of her 99th birthday wish; to once again attend church and hear the Word of God. Throughout her life, Mae enjoyed cooking, baking and occasionally making delicious homemade ice cream for family and friends. Above all, “Grandmama” was a devout Christian, teaching and talking about God to her family and praying constantly.
On April 18, 2018, at the age of 99, she joined our Heavenly Father. She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted daughter Barbara and son-in-law Randolph, daughter Patricia Bailey, daughter-in-law, Louise Graham, four grandchildren, Randy (Etta), Bernadette, Monica and Tiffany, four great-grandchildren, Jasmine Hubbard (Joe III), Nicole, Theodric and Jasmine Nicole, seven great- great- grandchildren, Joe IV, Jackson, Jarrett, Jordan, Jenesis, Jay and Jade, extended family members Clarence and Barbara Marshall and a host of relatives and friends.

Sincerely, my deepest condolences during this time of sadness and grief. May the powerful and encouraging words written in the Bible sooth the pain of your heart. Psalm 34:18 tells us that “God is near to those that are broken at heart.” A comforting thought to keep in mind is at Isaiah 25:8 “He (God) will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces.” What a wonderful time that will be!
