HAROLYN SYLVIA KIDD

September 4, 1932 ~ December 27, 2022

After a quiet Christmas with her children and grandchildren, Harolyn Sylvia Brown Kidd transitioned from this world to the loving arms of Christ on December 27, 2022.

Harolyn was born September 4, 1932, to Harold Jeremiah Brown and Margaret Lovett Brown in Prichard, Alabama Harolyn was the oldest of nine children. She graduated from Central High School in 1949, received her bachelor’s degree in education from Alabama State College in 1953, and began her first teaching job at Mobile County Training School.

Harolyn was extraordinarily talented and blessed others with the talents God gave her. Her motto was in the lyrics to one of her favorite songs, “If I can Help Somebody.” She greatly loved children and encouraged them to believe in themselves and strive to achieve their full potential. She was an artist from her heart. She was an art teacher and made herself available to work within the community, at church, and in school. While living in Mobile, she would create artwork from something as simple as driftwood. She and her husband made a life-size nativity scene for a Christmas play at school, and when a parent requested, she donated it to their church. Harolyn sang contralto and had a beautiful voice; you would never even know she had terrible stage fright. She sang in several different languages. She was said to be the next Leontyne Price. She, her sister, Nina, and a friend, appeared on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. Harolyn taught music and was also a pianist.

Harolyn married her beloved husband, Lovelace Turner Kidd, on January 23, 1959. Harolyn and Lovelace went on to have three children. They moved from Mobile, Ala, to San Antonio, TX, in 1967 when Brookley AFB closed. Harolyn’s first job in San Antonio was teaching at Dorie Miller Elementary before settling in at Pershing Elementary, where she taught for many years. Harolyn retired in 2004 and spent time being the absolute best grandmother imaginable. She also enjoyed creating ceramic pieces and firing them in her kiln. She would bring the art to life once she painted their eyes.

Harolyn was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and siblings: Nina Flanagan (Sam), Joseph Brown, Albert, Harold Brown jr. (Donna), Lovett Brown (Geraldine), and grandson Dillan J. Kidd.

Harolyn leaves many family members and friends who will cherish her life and legacy; Margaret Ume (Gabriel), Lovelace T. Kidd Jr., Harold J Kidd (Verne), and grandchildren:

Gabriel O. Ume (Brittany), Taylor L. Kidd, Harlon A. Ume, and Giselle H. Kidd, great-grandchildren: Harmony S. J. Ume, Elijah M. Ume, Josiah A. Ume, Elliott J. Ume, and Emmitt A. Ume, siblings Fredrick Brown, Arnold Brown (Joyce), Rose Gosin (James) and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, God sons, friends, and church family.
