Alvin Roberts was born February 26,1931 in Humble, TX. He was the only child born to Johnnie Roberts and Annie Mae Johnson. Alvin married Shirley Hoeft and one son was born from that union.

Alvin was lovingly raised by his devoted Aunt Isabel, in San Antonio, TX. Her guidance and care helped shape the man he would become. The values she instilled in him during his early years remained evident throughout his life—in his integrity, his compassion, and his unwavering commitment to others.

Alvin was a proud graduate of Phyllis Wheatley High School, an institution known for shaping generations of leaders. He continued his academic journey at Prairie View A&M University, where he graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. While at Prairie View, he was a member of their 1953 SWAC Black Championship football team. This is where he earned his nickname “Fox” because no one could catch him.

He furthered his education by earning a Master of Social Work degree from Wayne State University, equipping him for a life of service and leadership. His professional journey led him to Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI, where he served as Director of Black Studies during the 1970s. In this role, Mr. Roberts was a trailblazer during a transformative period in higher education. He helped advance Black Studies as an essential academic discipline, creating space for the study and appreciation of African American history and culture. His work contributed to a broader movement that empowered students and ensured that future generations would see themselves reflected in their education.

Alvin held a deep and abiding love for his Prairie View A&M University Class of 1953. He remained a dedicated and faithful member throughout the years cherishing the lifelong bonds, fellowship, and shared legacy of his classmates. His connection to Prairie View was a reflection of his enduring commitment to community, tradition, and excellence.

Grounded in both faith and service, Alvin was a devoted Member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where his commitment extended far beyond attendance. After retiring and returning to San Antonio, he faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher, pouring wisdom, insight, and love into the lives of others. His dedication to ministry and service was recognized when he was honored as St. Paul’s Man of the year in 2025, a testament to the lasting impact of his faithfulness and character.

Alvin’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. He is cherished by his son, Andrew Roberts (Heather), two grandsons, Jeremiaha Iribarren, Raymond Iribarren, and one granddaughter, Isabel Roberts, whose name lovingly echoes the woman who raised him. He also leaves behind his dear Prairie View classmate and devoted friend, Canary Hughey Bursey, whom he faithfully called every Monday through Friday at 6:00a.m.—a testament to his loyalty, consistency, and the value he placed on friendship. He will also be missed by Pauline Roberts, cousins, special friends and his beloved church family.

Mr. Roberts’ life was one of quiet strength, enduring faith, and meaningful impact—touching lives in the classroom, the church, and the community. He will be remembered as a scholar, a servant, and a man whose life made a difference.
