VIRGINIA NANCY FLETCHER
August 12, 1918 ~ July 6, 2020
Virginia N. Fletcher, 101, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland was called home by the Lord to His Kingdom on July 6, 2020 in San Antonio, TX.
She was born to her parents, the late Henry and Alice Hodge, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland on August 12, 1918.
She lived and worked in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. On May 2, 2002 she was moved to San Antonio TX so her daughter Anastasia could assist in her care. She resided at the Paramount Nursing Home (now known as Heritage Nursing Home) until her death.
Virginia helped with her mom’s Laundry Business. Also, she and her brother Raymond made deliveries with their little wagon. Her family also raised tobacco crops for themselves and sharecropped for others to support the family.
Although she only had one biological brother, she had an extended family as her mother did Foster Care for the government. These children became her brothers and sisters, which she enjoyed.
Intelligent beyond her schooling, she skipped several grades. However. She quit school in the 9th grade to help her mom with the laundry business.
Virginia was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Benjamin F. Fletcher Sr in Upper Marlboro, Md. Benjamin’s family lived next door. Virginia played with his sisters but had her eyes on him too. Their union brought forth seven children: Benjamin Jr, Vincent, Stephen, Anastasia, Diane, Larry, and Joseph Fletcher.
She worked as a housekeeper, maid, and babysitter. Faith in God was very important to her. She was a Catholic Convert and worked many odd jobs to pay the tuition to send all seven of her children through 8 years of Catholic School.
Virginia saw beauty in everyone and in everything. She was very generous and would happily give you the last of anything she had. In Maryland she was known as the “neighborhood Mom” who gave free child care and meals after school for many. She welcomed anyone into her home.
Virginia was the author of many sayings: “Jesus knows what He’s doing!”, “It’s complicated”-when she didn’t want to explain her deep thoughts, “My mind is like a rabbit’s tail-short”, when asked how she was feeling she’d reply “Fine as silk”, if you happen to get on her bad side you heard “You Monkey.”
She kept a stylish appearance and greeted all with a wide smile and a compliment. Virginia was a great Historian and told her stories with enthusiasm and humor.
She enjoyed the staff, residents and the many activities of Paramount/Heritage Nursing Home, especially Church services, Bingo, crafting, cooking, and the Parties.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Henry Hodge; husband Benjamin Fletcher Sr; sons Vincent, Larry and Benjamin Jr; daughter Diane Thompson (Luther).
She is survived by her children: Stephen Fletcher Sr., Anastasia Dreighton (Carl) of San Antonio TX, Joseph Fletcher Sr, self-adopted sister Sarah Hogan, and a host of family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Ms. Fletcher had a heart if gold I had the pleasure taking care of her at Paramount Rehab on the 200 wing back in 2003 to 2008 I believe. She would always give my children change for the snack machine. I would visit her time to time when I visited my Great Grandma Earline Davis. My mom and I would give her gifts on Holidays and she was so grateful! You were very blessded to have a woman of God with a pleasure of making everyone around her smile to be a part of her life.
