Vernita Van Slyke

July 2, 1949 ~ July 7, 2025

A very loving mother, sister, aunt, and dear friend, Vernita Van Slyke passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on July 2, 1949, in Los Angeles, California, she was the cherished daughter of Vernon L. Hill and Udell Hubbard.

Vernita was a devoted mother and a generous, kindhearted woman who lived her faith with grace and purpose. A devout Christian, she truly personified love—radiating warmth, kindness, and compassion to all who knew her.

She had a zest for life and a deep appreciation for beauty and adventure. She loved to travel, with Hawaii being one of her favorite destinations, and she enjoyed taking many cruises over the years. An avid painter, Vernita found joy in expressing herself through art. She was also a passionate fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers, and had a special fondness for elephants, which she admired for their strength and gentle nature.

Professionally, Vernita dedicated 40 years of service to the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), where she worked as a procurement manager until her retirement. She was respected and admired for her commitment, diligence, and professionalism.

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents and her sister, Denise Hill Griffin.

Vernita leaves to cherish her memory: her loving sons, Michael Van Slyke (Harmoni Anderson) and Gene Van Slyke; her sisters, Sandra Boykins and Bettye Hill; her nieces, Dionne Rich (George), Dayna Guyton, and Queen Robinson (Archie); her nephews, Darin Boykins and Samuel Hill; and her uncle, Oliver Hill—along with a host of extended family members and lifelong friends.

Her legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
