SAMUEL NELSON

May 28, 1939 ~ December 13, 2024

Samuel Nelson, 85, of San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 13, 2024. A graveside service with military honors will be held on January 8, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (Shelter #4).

Samuel was born on May 28, 1939, in Silas, AL, to the late Tullie and Maggie Lean (Smith) Nelson. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1987, completing 26 years of service and multiple combat tours in support of the Vietnam War.

Samuel is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 47 years, Vichien Nelson, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He leaves behind his cherished children: Deena and her husband Henry Clark; Jackie and her husband Drew Hoffman; David and his wife Tanya Nelson; and son Marvin Nelson. Samuel was also a proud grandfather to 12 beloved grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his last remaining sibling, Delsena, and her husband Charles Philon, of Silas, Alabama, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers—Gus, Fred, James, and Levy Nelson—and his two sisters, Daisy Nelson and Catherine McGrew.

Samuel will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his wife, family, and country, as well as his remarkable ability to bring humor to even the gravest of situations. Whether it was cracking a joke at just the right moment or lightening the mood with a wry comment, his wit was as sharp as his love was deep. His gentle kindness and infectious laughter will be cherished by all who knew him.
