The world was blessed with the birth of Reuben Benjamin Wesley on July 19, 1933 to Dora and Lonnie B. Wesley in Marshall, Texas. He was preceded in death by parents, his first-born son, Reuben Benjamin Wesley II, brother Henry, and sister Evelyn.
Reuben was married to the soft spoken and beautiful Shirley Mae Wesley for 62 years. Within this union were born two more children; daughters Jackie and Terri. He had four grandchildren Shanika, Larry, Rahshied, and Terrance, two great grandchildren Cedreon and Ameesha, and one great-great grandson Zion. Included within this union are Don (Terri) son-in-law, Rodney (Jackie) son-in-law, and Deanna (Rahshied) grand daughter-in-law. He is also survived by his eldest sister Florence Ann and brothers Patrick and Thomas.
Reuben was a generous and loving son, husband, father and friend; he knew no stranger. When you encountered him, it was with a smile, handshake and a joke, if you knew him well. He taught both his family the value of honesty, hard work, and to be kind to everyone you met. He would say, “ You never know how kindness and a smile can lift someone up”.
Reuben was baptized and born again as a member of Wheatley Heights Baptist Church. He was an alumnus of Phyllis Wheatley High School and attended St. Phillips College where he studied to be a tailor. For 37 years Reuben worked for San Antonio Transit System (VIA). He was the first black bus driver and first black supervisor for VIA and for the city of San Antonio. After retiring he was extremely active within the community. His pride and joy was gardening and cultivating vegetables throughout every season. His greatest Love was his wife Shirley and his greatest accomplishment was ensuring his family felt supported and adored.

My prayers and condolences to my friend (Jackie) and her entire family. Stories that Jackie has shared with me about her dad and reading his obituary tells me that he was a great man. What a blessing to have called him your Dad, brother, son, uncle, grandpa and most of all husband. May he rest with God and God Bless you all.

Mr Wesley was one of my Dad, John W Applin, closest friends. They lived on the same street, Dorie, during their lives. Mr Wesley was like an uncle and will always b remembered for his smile, his kindness, and protection. He often shared his garden vegetables with the family. I know he and Dad will now share ole times and stories as they watch over their kids and grands. Rest n love and peace Mr Wesley!
On behalf of the residents and staff of The Village at Incarnate Word I want to express our sympathy to the Wesley family, especially our co-worker and friend, Jackie Carr. We see the qualities he valued exemplified every day in his daughter. Surely Jesus met him with open arms and the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the Kingdom!”Â
I was so sorry to hear of Reuben’s death and we want to express our most sincere sympathies to you and the family during this difficult timeÂ
Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Dear Family:
Please accept my heartfelt condolences in the loss of your dear loved one. Please find comfort in the scripture at 1 Corinthians !:3,4, where it says in part, “Praise be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trialsso that we may be able to comfort others in any sort of trial.”   What a wonderful thought to dwell on.
My condolences to the Wesley family. May God bless all of you.
