Nathaniel William Davis’ life began when he was born on August 25, 1957 to Nadine J. Davis and Odie E. Davis Jr.  He was the youngest of three siblings.  His life ended on January 4, 2022.

Nate as he was called is a native San Antonian. He is an alumni of Brackenridge/ Phyllis Wheatley High School. He played basketball and baseball while in high school.  He received a partial basketball scholarship to Prairie View A&M University. During his tenure he also played baseball for the Panthers.

He grew up in the YMCA by following his father to work every day and participating in all the various activities that were offered at the Alamo Branch.  He returned from college in 1980 to pursue the Physical Education Director’s job of the then Alamo Branch YMCA.  Through his dedication to the field, he received such promotions as Aquatic Director, Sr. Program Director, Associate Director and Executive Director of the Davis-Scott YMCA, which was named after his father.  He spearheaded the summer youth baseball programs and the annual Basketball Tournament where teams from all over the world participated.  He also sponsored and coached the well-known Denver Heights Bears Semi Pro Baseball Team after he retired from playing on the team.

On October 23, 2009 Nathaniel William Davis married Bertha Marie Tealer.  His life began a new chapter with the love of his life who was with him every step of the way and involved in all his endeavors.  Through this union they raised 2 boys and later 3 grandsons.

Nate’s Legacy began by him being a very integral part of the community. Not only was he involved with the Y activities, but he also served as the Commission Chair for the 2017 30th Anniversary of the San Antonio MLK March.  He was a part of the MLK March every year by promoting scholarship funds for local youth.  He continued his hard work for raising record breaking amounts to support the fund.  He was a part of the Juneteenth Celebrations each year bringing local and talents abroad to Comanche Park.  Through his focus on the inner-city and at-risk youth and low- income families, he drew clients from all over the area.

Religion was number one on his list.  He was a loyal hard-working servant of St. Paul United Methodist Church.  He served on the Methodist Men Board of Stewards, Finance Committee, and the Senior Usher Board.  Finally, to complete his thirty-two years of service, he was the Director of Major Gifts and Community Relations for the YMCA of Greater San Antonio Association Office.

After retirement, Nate continued to be active in the lives of the youth of today.  He sponsored and help fund his sister’s afterschool program and organization in Houston, Texas, the Bulldog Express Performance Group.  He made monetary donations to help these youth travel to Prairie View A&M University, Goodrich, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, Dallas, Texas and Orlando, Florida for competitions and special performances.
