Minnie Marie Hill

October 1, 1943 ~ May 4, 2018

Minnie Marie Mabry Hill, the eldest child born to Isaac George and Ruth Pauline Mabry, was born in San Antonio, Texas October 1, 1943. Her father, mother, brother Dan and sisters Shirley and Darlene preceded her in death.

Minnie was baptized in West End Baptist Church where she began her early Christian journey. She became a member of St. James AME Church after her marriage to husband Oliver on July 31, 1964. She later moved her membership to St. Paul United Methodist Church where she remained until her death.

While at St. Paul, she served on the Usher Board, the Administrative Council and the Pastor Parish Relations Committee.

Minnie attended public schools in the San Antonio Independent School District (Grant Elementary, Dunbar Junior High and Thomas Jefferson High). She was the first African American to be a member of the famous Lasso Rope Team. She later became a member of the TJHS Lasso Alumni Association. After High School she attended St. Philip’s College and Texas State University.

Minnie entered employment with the Federal Government – working with the Social Security Administration, Infectious Disease Department at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and Kelly Air Force Base, Texas. She left Civil Service in 1992 to seek outside employment and returned to retire in 2010. Minnie was active in several organizations including the Government Girls, the YMPC Ladies Auxiliary,
and the Ground Strokers Tennis Club. She later became a member of the Pals Social Club where she
sponsored several young ladies in their introduction to society. She served two terms as its President. She had a special gift in scouting for young girls as future debutantes by approaching parents and setting timelines for their induction in future Debutante Coteries. She still maintained a list of potential debutantes at the time of her demise.

For Civic Engagement activities, Minnie was a member of the TIRZ Board that encompassed actions for City Council District 2. She became active with the San Antonio Branch NAACP where she served as Chair of the Community Coordinating Committee. She was instrumental in the preparation of the Annual Jubilee Celebrations and the Founder’s Day Celebration of 100 years of advocacy for freedom and justice. She was also Chair of the 2018 Convention Committee that submitted the successful bid to bring the National Convention to San Antonio in the year 2018. She was recognized at the 2017 Freedom Fund Dinner for this effort.

Minnie was a charter member of the National Council of Negro Women, Ruth Jones McClendon Chapter where she served a term as treasurer. She greatly enjoyed the camaraderie at events that engaged the membership in community outreach.

Minnie was a loving and caring person who loved God, her family and especially her grandchildren. The sound of “YaYa” during their presence always delighted her beyond belief. Nothing was too good for the “babies.” Minnie leaves to morn her devoted husband of fifty-three years, her children Oliver Jr., Caron Susann and Shannon Diane and her granddaughters Hannah Marie-Caron and Jillian Ellesse Simpson. She also leaves to mourn, her brothers Manzola “Sonny” Mabry (Sheree) and Randal “Billy” Mabry, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

  1. May I encourage you to: Talk to God in prayer- (Psalms 55:22). Death is not natural so when one losses a loved one we ask, “Will they live again”? The Bible writer, Job asked the same question. Please read, Job 14:14-15. God is eager to resurrect your loved one who is now sleeping in death. 1 Corinthians 15:26, says that God views death as an enemy. May this be of comfort to you at this time.
