In Loving Memory of Lola Gay Lewis

Sunrise: May 27, 1962 – Sunset: July 26, 2025

With love in our hearts and memories we’ll forever treasure, we celebrate the life of Lola Gay Lewis, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who departed this life peacefully on July 26, 2025. Born on May 27, 1962, in Hawaii to the late Joseph L. and Pearl S. Hartfield, Lola’s radiant spirit touched countless lives in her 63 years.

Lola was the kind of soul who lit up every room she entered. Her joy was contagious, her love unwavering, and her compassion boundless. She gave without hesitation, helped without judgment, and loved without limits. Whether you knew her for a moment or a lifetime, you knew kindness—and you likely heard her laugh.

Lola served faithfully at St. Joseph A.M.E. Church in San Antonio, TX, for more than ten years and also gave of her time and heart to Golden Gate Missionary Church. Her faith was her foundation, and she walked in love and service each day.

Her heart for children found a special place at South Texas Center for Pediatric Care, where she poured joy, warmth, and care into her work with babies, mothers, doctors, and colleagues. To know Lola in the workplace was to experience compassion in action.

She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Deana (Damien) and Cornell (Tiffany); her treasured grandchildren: Harmoni, Ayanna, Malachi, Elijah, Trinity, and Josiah; her devoted brothers: Edward, Robert, Frank, and Samuel Hartfield; beloved sisters: Mary Sheppard and Nejuana Priestley; dear friend: Cornell Graves III; and former husband: Rev. Bobby Lewis. Lola also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who held her close in their hearts.

She now joins in eternal peace her parents, sisters Brenda, Belinda, Pearl, and Celestine Hartfield; brothers Joe B. and James “Squirrel” Hartfield; niece Daija Hartfield; nephew Maurice Hartfield and Monty Runnels; and granddaughter Nadia Heningburg, who no doubt welcomed her with open arms.

Though her physical presence has left us, Lola’s love remains a steady flame in our hearts. Her legacy is one of grace, warmth, laughter, and faith. She will be deeply missed—and forever remembered.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:21

Guestbook

  1. Lola was my chief assistant for over a year (2015-2016) when we were asked to lead in the start-up of a special clinic for children in foster care. She proved to be a very reliable and hard worker. She had the people skills that not only win people over but are so, so desperately needed by children in foster care and those families taking care of them. She also shared her thoughts and observations when they might be helpful, and she was not intimidated by people who had a lot of initials after their names. At the same time, she remained humble and true to herself. Most importantly, she really loved and cared for others, which is what our personal and work lives should be all about.

She will be missed by all of us. But we should count ourselves as tremendously blessed to have known her. I believe in Heaven and know Lola is there.
