JOHNNIE MAE WHITE

December 10, 1922 ~ October 2, 2018

Johnnie Mae White was born in the small town of Oakland, TX to Shellie and Elizabeth Townsend on December 10, 1922.  She was the 4th daughter of 9 children.  At a young age, she attended Oakland Hill Baptist Church, and once she gave her life to Christ, she was baptized in the East Navidad River.  Johnnie Mae loved to sing, and at the age of 12 she joined the Carrent Baptist Church Choir in Schulenberg, TX.  On March 4, 1946 she married Charles White Sr and from this union five children were born; Charles Jr., Brenda, Stanley, Reginald Sr., and Jayne.  Charles’ career in the military took the family all over the world, including Chateauroux, France.  Not forgetting her roots, Johnnie Mae joined the military church choir while living overseas in France.  Upon the family’s return to the states in 1958, they settled in San Antonio, TX and quickly made it home.  It was at this time that Johnnie Mae joined Tried Stone Baptist Church, a church home that she loved and cherished until the day she died.  She completed nursing courses at St. Phillips college and was a nurse for 10 years at Normandy Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  The last years of her working life were spent at Lee High School as a cafeteria cook, and she retired in the 1980s.  She spent her retirement enjoying her family and friends, tending to her garden, traveling to visit her children and grandchildren, and serving with her church community.

Johnnie Mae is preceded in death by her husband: Charles White Sr.; and two sons: Charles Jr., and Stanley.  She leaves behind to cherish her memory one brother: Shellie of Houston, TX; two sisters: Catherine and Lily both of Houston, TX; one son: Reginald of San Antonio, TX; two daughters: Brenda of San Antonio, TX and Jayne (husband Lawrence) of Fredericksburg, VA; one daughter-in-law: Joyce of Dallas, TX; five grandsons: Larry (wife Ricki) of San Antonio, TX; Randy (wife Shayla) of Carrollton, TX; Ronald of Dallas, TX; Wendell of Fayetteville, NC; and Renarldo (wife Kim) of Grand Prairie, TX; two  granddaughters: Amber (husband Aubrey) of Alexandria, VA; Marissa of San Antonio, TX; 2 great-grandsons and one on the way, 6 great-granddaughters, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
