JO ANN SCOTT

February 14, 1945 ~ September 13, 2024

Mother JoAnn Scott, born on February 14, 1945, in Matador, Texas, was the cherished daughter of the late Estelle James and Roscoe Smith. She was the eldest sibling to her twin brothers, Cledale and Leedale Smith.

Mother Scott graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School and later earned an associate degree in Medical Technology from St. Philip’s College San Antonio, Texas. She was a lifelong lover of books, known for her intellectual curiosity and passion for reading.

On August 3, 1962, Mother Scott married the love of her life, Charles E. Scott Sr. Their 45 years together were marked by love, devotion, and four beautiful children: Andrea Diane (Glenn), Charles Edward Jr. (Demetria), Sandra Lynette, and Marcus Jamal (deceased). Their marriage was a testament to partnership and faith.

Raised in the Baptist tradition, Mother Scott deepened her faith journey upon marrying Charles Scott, becoming a devoted member of Childress Memorial Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in San Antonio, Texas. Under the leadership of Bishop T.D. Iglehart and later Bishop S.E. Iglehart, she served her church family in numerous roles, including President of the Sewing Circle, YWCC (Young Women Christian Council), CWC (Christian Women’s Council), and as a member of the Mothers Board, Pastor’s Aid, Sick and Shut-in Outreach, Usher Board, and the annual Christmas Basket Giveaway. Her heart for service extended to her community as well, including contributions to Pop Warner Football, the Parent Teacher Association, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Wives Auxiliary, Psi Alpha Chapter.

Mother Scott dedicated 33 years to Santa Rosa Hospital, where she worked diligently and retired with honor. After her beloved Charles passed, she relocated to Georgia to be closer to her children. In Georgia, she found a new church home at Restoration Revival COGIC under the leadership of Elder Dennis L. Martin and Co-Pastor June P. Martin.

Mother Scott’s legacy lives on through her nine grandchildren: Tiffany Nichole (Michael), Omar Alexander (Chanell), Brittane Nicole, Marcus Jamal Jr., Rachel Makayla, Mikael Matthew, Makiyah Monique, Joy Gabriella, and Charles Edward II. She was also blessed with four great- grandchildren: Sean Mark Xavier, Omar Alexander Jr, Michael Xavier and Maya Estelle Sally, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, godchildren, relatives, and friends.

Mother Scott will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her love for family, and her lifelong service to others. Her kindness, wisdom, and nurturing spirit touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
