A TIME TO BE BORN:
James Melvin McGowan was born September 21,1935 in Point-blank, Tx to the union of the late Sam McGowan and Bertha Griffin McGowan.
James was the only child born during this union.
Wednesday May 1, 2024, at the age of 88, James entered a life of rest with his family by his side. He was a devoted husband and loving father. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
A TIME TO RENDER:
James attended Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston, Tx and graduated in 1953. Shortly thereafter, James married Bertha Matthew, who proceeded him in death. Two children were born during this union. Daryln McGowan Tolbert and James McGowan Jr., both of Houston Texas.
James enlisted in the United States Air Force and serviced twenty-one and a half years. He also completed twenty years of Civil Service. James was an exceptional member of the community. After his retirement, he joined Palestine Baptist Church under the late Reverend L.A. Crenshaw. James accepted Christ at an early age. He was an ordained Deacon and served on the Usher board. James also joined the choir and sang with the male chorus.
TILL DEATH DO US PART:
In 2021, James married the love of his life, Geneva Gordon McGowan of San Antonio, Tx. His heart was filled with happiness and unconditional love from the moment God allowed their paths to cross.
James enjoyed the simple things in life, such as spending time with his lovely wife. Together they enjoyed eating barbecue at Smitty's and Black's in Lockhart, Texas. They also enjoyed spending time together at Buc-ee's. James spent time wood carving. He also loved short road trips with his wife, attending family reunions. James was a member of a motorcycle club. During his spare time, he relaxed in his recliner watching squirrels and Western shows.
PRECIOUS MEMORIES:
James is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Geneva McGowan, his daughter Daryln Tolbert and son James McGowan Jr. Both of Houston Tx. Stepdaughters, LaWanda "Monique" Powdrill Eitwanda Moore (Jabrelle) of Dallas, Tx. Ebony Moore. Stepson Kevin Harris (Gigi) Granddaughter Darnisha Austell of Humble, Tx. Grandson Derrick Washington (preceded him in death), of Houston Tx. Step grandsons Jayceon Williams and Keith Tealer. Three Great-grandsons. Shaolin Austell, Asher Austell, and Nobel Komimi of Humble, Tx. His two deceased cousins that were more like a brother and sister, Robert (R.L.) Agnew (Daisy) of Houston, Tx and Josie Mae Stelly of Point-blank, Tx.
James also leaves a host of devoted cousins and dear friends.
