Horace Johnsonn was born on March 22, 1935, in Weimar, TX to Tom Johnson and Willie Mae Ussery who preceded him in death, and his beloved grandmother, Della Johnson, who raised him.
Horace accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Weimar where he served as a youth Sunday School teacher.
After graduating from the Colored High School in 1952, Horace enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the armed forces as a Paratrooper until 1956.
On February 5, 1954, Horace married the love of his life, Ivory Mae Braziel. They were married for 72 years. To this union two children were born, Dannie R. Johnson and Candace I. Johnson.
In 1957, Horace moved his family from Weimar and made San Antonio, TX their home. He attended St. Phillips College to further his education. During this time, Horace worked several different jobs to provide for his family. Horace landed his dream job as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Post Office where he was employed for 35 years. In addition, he moonlighted ten of those years as a waiter at various hotels retiring in 1988. He spent his leisure time with his grandsons, Junior, Billy and Big De’Shawn and playing cards and dominoes.
Horace was a continuous faithful member of Bethel A.M.E. Church where he joined in November 1957. He was involved in several organizations. His greatest joy was serving as Trustee Pro Tem and working with the Boy Scouts until his stroke in 1998. After his stroke, Horace was the contact person for the Lay Organization which he enjoyed very much.
With heavy hearts, Horace leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife, Ivory Mae Johnson; son, Dannie Ray Johnson, Sr. (JoAnn); daughter, Candace I. J. Wilson; his sisters, Gladys Roberts (Duncanville, TX) and Laura Bankston (North Carolina); 7 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding him in death were 2 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 sister-in-law, 2 brothers-in-law and 1 great-grandson.
