HELEN RUTH WHORTON

November 18, 1933 ~ April 26, 2020

Helen Ruth (Demus) Whorton was born November 18, 1933, in Limestone County, Texas, to William Roy Demus Sr. and Alvie (Moss) Demus.  Helen passed away peacefully amongst family, at her son’s home on April 26, 2020.

Helen married her husband of 46 years, Dee L. Whorton on June 25, 1961.  They moved to San Antonio in 1964, and both were certainly be considered pillars of the community.  Helen and D.L. raised to sons, Michael (Juanita) and Dwight (Sharonda).  They resided in their home together for 44 years, before DL’s passing in 2008, Helen resided in the Eastside Community of San Antonio for a total of 52 years, before moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area in 2016.

Helen accepted Christ very early in her childhood while attending Union Primitive Baptist Church in Limestone County.   She joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor C.M. Graham shortly after moving to San Antonio.  Helen was a member of the choir, and contributed greatly to the formation, and the ongoing activities of the Drill Team.  Her membership, contributions and participation continued under current leadership of Pastor Victor Herbin.  Helen was a cheerful tither, and also an avid giver to Men and Women’s day, and all special days and events.  After moving to DFW Helen joined North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship, Pastor Dr. Terren Dames.

After graduating from Furney-Richardson School at age 16, Helen spent two years working in the cotton fields before pursing higher education.  She entered Prairie View A&M College of Texas, initially as a music education major.   She graduated with a Bachelors of Education and later earned a Master of Education.

Helen began her teaching career at the same school she attended in Limestone County, and later worked in the city of Teague, TX, and then San Antonio I.S.D. for a short period of time.  The vast majority of her teaching career, was served in Edgewood I.S.D, at Cenizo Park Elementary (now Roy Cisneros Elementary) as a reading instructor.   Helen retired in 1990 after 32 years of service in Texas public education.

Helen is a Lifetime Member of the Prairie View A&M University Alumni Association.  Before moving to DFW she was a very active member of the local San Antonio chapter.  She regularly attended local events as well as events on “the Hill”.  One of her proudest moments was attending the graduation of her grandson from Prairie View A&M University in December of 2018.

Helen was a committed and dedicated educator.  She was giving, kind-hearted and very friendly to all.  She enjoyed sharing her wisdom and providing words of encouragement.   By all accounts, Helen is a fine example of what it means to be a faithful Believer and devoted Christian.

Helen Ruth Whorton is survived by her 2-sons, 2-daughters-in-law, 6-grandsons; Michael Jr., Malcolm, Kedrion, Marcel, Daniel and Devin, a granddaughter; Syerra, 4-sisters, 2-brothers, and a host of relatives and friends.
