Hays Butler

February 24, 1951 ~ March 24, 2018

Bro. Hays Butler, Jr. was born February 1, 1951 to Hays Butler, Sr. and Helen Robinson, who preceded him in death, in Cuero, Texas. He has five siblings: Dorothy Thomas (Calvin), Kathy Wilson (Kevin), Ardelia Dennis (Dexter), Sylvia Butler, and Calvin Butler (Yvette). At an early age, he and his family relocated to San Antonio where he attended John J. Pershing Elementary School, James Whitcomb Riley Middle School and was an avid athlete and graduated from Wheatley High School in 1970. He met the love of his life, Mildred Peoples, whom he married on July 18, 1969. To this union six children were born: Hays Edward Butler, Marvin Leon Butler (preceded him in death), Marva Lynette Butler-Otis (Kenneth), Dannette Michelle Butler-Hayward (Darnyl), Evan Deshawn Butler (Cordelia), and Sharonda Lachoy Butler.

Hays worked for the San Antonio Independent School District for more than 20 years, retiring in 2004. He subsequently worked for Maranatha Bible Church as a staff custodian from 2004 until his health failed in 2017.

Hays had a green thumb and could make anything grow. He loved to make his yard the best looking yard in the neighborhood. He was also known as a "Jack-of-all-trades." He could fix, grow, and restore just about anything. He was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs fan, telling all who would listen, "I've been a Cowboy since I was a little boy!" Hays never met a stranger and would engage into a conversation with everyone he encountered.

He leaves to cherish many wonderful memories his wife, children, 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
