Grady Goodley

January 22, 1920 ~ April 1, 2018

Grady Goodley was born January 22,1920 to Henry Clay Hill and Sophronia Carter Hill (both deceased) in Austin, Texas. She is the third of eleven siblings. Four are still alive: Aurelia Harris, Marilyn Hill, Louise Corris, and Lois Hill. Those who preceded her in death are: Dale Robey, Cora Hill, Jack Hill, Colienn Hill, Nokomis Hill, twin-sister Grace, Fred Hill, and Lois Hill.

She grew up in Austin and moved to Germany after marrying the love of her life, Marion Goodley who preceded her death. They were a military couple who traveled the world and after achieving the rank of Master Sergeant, they retired from the United States Air Force. Following their retirement here in San Antonio, Mother Goodley attended Hicks Beauty College where she obtained her operator's license, becoming owner and operator of Grady's Beauty Salon. In addition to her home, the property was large enough to accommodate her salon in the rear and a rental apartment. Mother Goodley was known among family and friends as a "white glove" cleaning inspector and housekeeper. No one was permitted to cross the line. Mother Goodley, a firm disciplinarian required those who misbehave to pick their own switch for punishment and if during worship service, you could always expect a "twisting" painful pinch.

Mother Grady united with the Greater Corinth Baptist Church October 17, 1950 under the pastorate of Rev. B. T. Alexander. She was an active member of the Drama Guild for many years; otherwise, she was content to simply worship.

Mother Grady was a fashionable and elegant shopper who loved to change fashions with the seasons. She was an expert gardener who loved all types of plants. She consistently practiced her own "in house" healing with the use of aloe vera as a cure for everything.

Her television never moved from Channel 5. No matter what the programming, the television remained set unless the San Antonio Spurs were playing. She did not lack for choice words if "Pop" made a strange call or took out one of her favorite players.

She leaves to cherish her memory granddaughters (nieces) Linda Gunn and Susan Tippins Mason; grandniece Sophronia Davis; grandnephews Nicholas Welch, Chaz Welch, Robert Tones, great great nieces Kaliah Flowers, Faith Davis, Angel Nokomis Tones, Aaliyah Tones, and Universe Welch; great great nephews Donté Davis, Myguell Tones, Hero Welch, Chaz Welch, Jr. and a host of friends and relatives.

Guestbook

  1. My condolences to the Grant family. God will comfort the family during this difficult time. May the many cherished and loving memories of your deceased loved one, comfort the family and friends. A comforting thought to keep in mind is at Isaiah 25:8 “He (God) will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces.” May the wonderful promise of the resurrection hope found in the Bible at John 5:28-29 give you comfort during this difficult time.
