Francis “Frank” Nelson Nagle, born on July 17, 1960, in Fullerton, California, left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew him before his untimely passing on August 12, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. His vibrant spirit, characterized by a profound love for music, art, and the mysteries of the universe, encapsulated a life rich in creativity and connection. Frank’s journey, which spanned multiple states and countries, reflects a tapestry woven from diverse experiences and passions that continue to resonate with family and friends alike.
Growing up in California, Texas, and even Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Frank’s formative years were filled with the joy of exploration and discovery. The eclectic environments he inhabited contributed to a worldview that celebrated both the beauty of life and the intricacies of the cosmos. After his early years, he found himself in various locales, including California, and Texas, where he cultivated lasting relationships and shared his artistic gifts.
Frank’s musical journey was a cornerstone of his identity. An accomplished musician and guitarist, he played with several bands, including Night Train, Driftwood, the Dave Leidner Band, and Tiki Torches. His talent was not merely a hobby; it was a profound expression of his soul. Influenced by legendary artists such as Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, RUSH, and the Beatles, Frank’s musical prowess shone through in his performances and original compositions. Pieces like "Bahamas," "Quantum Foam," “Psychosoma,” "Pigmeat Spectrum," and "Synergistic Neoplatonism" not only showcased his technical skills but also reflected his brilliant mind and creative spirit. Each note he played was an incantation of his soul, a testament to his belief in the transformative power of music.
In addition to his musical talents, Frank was a gifted artist, excelling in both digital art and traditional pen drawings. His artwork, characterized by vibrant colors and intricate designs, sought to capture the beauty of the universe and the world around him. Frank often joked that his art and music were “frankantations of the soul,” a playful nod to his name and a reflection of his belief in the spiritual essence of creativity. His reactivated website, www.frankantations.com, promises to showcase his stunning depictions of life viewed through a geometric lens, inviting others to share in his vision of beauty and understanding.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Frank was a dreamer and a thinker, often engaging in discussions about the dimensions of the universe and alternate realities. His exceptional intelligence, combined with a delightful sense of humor, made conversations with him enlightening and entertaining. He had a unique ability to connect with others, nurturing friendships that spanned over four decades. Frank’s knack for making lists and sharing his insights made him a beloved companion, and his loyalty to friends and family was unwavering.
Frank’s personal life was equally rich. He was a devoted stepfather to Seth, providing care and support throughout his life. His affection extended to his cherished pet dog Emily—who was integral to his daily joy.
Frank’s legacy is one of creativity, connection, and compassion. He is survived by his former spouse, Gloria, and stepson Seth, who carry forth the memories of a man who embraced life with open arms.
The arrangements made by Lewis Funeral Home of San Antonio reflect the love and respect his family holds for him, with burial of his cremains pending in Shiner Cemetery, Shiner, TX, and a portion scattered in the California surf, honoring his wishes to return to the beauty he cherished.
In conclusion, Francis “Frank” Nelson Nagle was more than a musician and artist; he was a vibrant soul whose passion for life and creativity inspired all who knew him. Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of FRANCIS “FRANK”?
A: One of my favorite qualities of Frank was that he was a true friend in so many different ways. He wouldn’t forget his friends. Time and distance may have kept him from seeing friends for a long time but he never forgot how important they were to him.
He was what you called a friend for life. If he had the means, he would drop everything and help you.
Sometimes health issues or
pain would cause limitations in what he could do but he would make the effort.
For example, one time a friend was making a float for the Houston Art Car parade and needed help.
decorating it at the last minute hours before the parade started.
Frank dropped everything, drove 2 hours to Houston, and came to help. It had a “Day of the Dead†motif. Frank drew many sugar skulls and other art to help decorate and then plastered the float with his art. The float actually looked nice and was finished with minutes to spare. Sometimes, Frank could be your “go to guy.â€
Some of his choices however did have consequences that led to negative outcomes including his death. His quality of life near the end had deteriorated.
In the last years we had together he would share stories of his experiences with his friends. He imbued
me with rich tales of semi-adventures and escapades and pranks he and friends would pull on other friends.
One time, while camping with friends, he said he and another friend pulled a prank on the “Impeccable Nova.â€
It was a friend’s car that Frank said must be an outlet for an OCD own who kept it so clean it looked like it came off the showroom floor. The owner would clean dust off of it, kept it shiny and clean and had a trunk full of wipes and first aid kits and everything u might need in case of an emergency. This friend was PREPARED!!
Frank and another friend, while the owner friend was asleep, took the keys and went to the car. Frank bragged he was excellent in â€stealth†mode and quiet.
After they got in the car, Frank said they started doing donuts in the parking area and even figure 8’s.
I think they even drove into town to get food. They weren’t supposed to be eating in the car getting crumbs everywhere!
The came back and Frank in stealth mode put the keys back. The owner friend on checking his car saw it wasn’t impeccable and kinda just freaked. He had to go clean off the dirt and dust all over it.
Frank and his other friend just laughed. I don’t think the owner ever found out what happened!
Emily was our family dog, a German Shepherd mix, born on our ranch in Shiner, TX on Valentines Day 2005. Sadly Emily also passed away on 10/29/24 almost reaching 20 years of age. She loved Frank a lot and he would howl with her like they were part of a wolf pack. Now Emily is with Frank.
Tonite in the early morning of tomorrow will be the 1 year anniversary of your death. I will light a candle to remember you.
Emily died a few months after you-tired of living almost 2 decades for a dog. I hope she is with you now.
Sorry that your friends have forgotten you save one or two. They are busy with living and their problems. It’s sad- I thought you meant more to them.
But those who loved you haven’t forgotten. Everyday when we see your art or hear your music, you come alive again. In that you will live forever.
I wish you were alive now and things were different. You would be seeing the sequel to Spinal Tap, listening to G3 Reunion Live 2025, and /or going to see Paul McCartney in concert. So many lost opportunities.
Perhaps u can enjoy in spirit. I do remember you even if u have been forgotten by many.
And watching the new season of King of the Hill enjoying a Whataburger.
Lit a candle to remember you.
