Sgt. Ellis John Haynes, E5, was born on December 12, 1953, in San Antonio, Texas, at Robert B. Green Hospital, to the late Alberta and Jimmy Haynes Sr. He was baptized at a young age and accepted Christ early in life. Ellis peacefully transitioned on December 29, 2025.
Ellis attended St. Philip’s College, where he completed two years of study. A dedicated and hardworking man, his greatest personal accomplishment was fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a truck driver. He proudly spent 15 years on the road, a career he deeply loved, before continuing his professional journey as a Greyhound Bus Operator for 11 years, serving countless passengers with professionalism, patience, and care.
Ellis proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was inducted on April 6, 1973, in Kansas City, Missouri, and honorably discharged in February 1981 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. During his military service in the Vietnam War era, he advanced through the ranks and attained the rank of Sergeant (E5). His service reflected courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment.
Ellis enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—fishing, cooking, playing cards, watching NASCAR, and building model cars—but above all, he loved making people laugh. Known for his quick wit and love of telling jokes, Ellis had a special gift for bringing smiles to others. His infectious laughter, warm spirit, and genuine love for people brought joy to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alberta and Jimmy Haynes Sr.; his sister, Rosie Harris; and his brothers, James Wormly and Jimmy Haynes Jr.
Ellis leaves to cherish his loving memory his sister, Netta Porter; sister-in-law, Carol Haynes; his two sons, Thatcher Haynes (Trisha) and Jermaine Haynes; four grandchildren—Tamera Haynes, Aliyah Haynes, Ashley McGarity, and LeAndre Anderson; along with a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
A Message from Ellis:
“Always do what you say you’re going to do. Don’t put everyone on hold. Be accountable. Remember me as always being there for you and making you laugh. Cherish the moments we had and continue to smile. I love you all.”

I’ll keep laughing. 🤎
