DORIS J. BELVIN

May 22, 1939 ~ September 27, 2020

Doris began her teaching career at James Whitcomb Riley Junior School. During the era of segregation, she was transferred to Sydney Lanier High School as a Social Studies teacher. She was soon promoted to counselor where she won over the love of her students and their parents, as well as staff and colleagues. She remained in this position at Lanier until she retired in 2000, after 42 years of service in the district.

Doris Jean Belvin was born on May 2, 1939 to Nathaniel and Myrtle Belvin who preceded her in death. She was the only child born to this union. She attended the public schools in the San Antonio Independent District graduating from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1957. She obtained her Associates of Arts Degree from St. Philips Jr. College, her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Huston Tillotson College in Austin, TX and her Master's Degree in Counseling from Our Lake of the Lake College.

During her tenure as an educator, Doris was affiliated with numerous organizations and associations, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Project Stay (serving many years as state board secretary), Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA), Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA), American & South Texas Counselors Associations, APPLE, and SA WAC, as a Licensure Professional Counselor. As a Licensure/Professional Counselor, Doris received many certificates and service awards for excellence.

  1. I was a junior when she was a senior at Phillis Wheatley High! She was a very pleasant person; we would often exchange greetings on Sundays at Spumc. She will be sorely missed. A friend Gaynell Sapenter Gainer

  2. Doris was a nice and kind beautiful woman – we worked together at Riley Middle School.  I will miss her very much. Rest in peace.

    All of my love,

  3. Ms. Belvin will be greatly missed!!! She was a very good friend to my mom Mary Cooley. They worked together at Riley Middle School and Lanier High School.  She attended my mom’s wedding before I was born.  I even have a picture of she and I where I was sitting on her lap with my Easter dress on.  She was always so nice! She attended my mom’s funeral in January and checked on my afterwards.  I was really shocked to hear of her passing.   Rest well in heaven Ms. Belvin!
    Love you!!!
    Candace

  4. I met Doris Jean through my husband and my in-laws. She and my mother in law, Rosie Coronado, were childhood friends and later reconnected as adults. She was so very kind and thoughtful. She called my mother in law every week until she passed away in 2016. Even after my mom in law’s passing, she still took the time out to check in on my father in law. She was a beautiful treasure and will be truly missed. Rest In Peace. Love You

  5. Mr. and Mrs. Belvin and Doris always sat on the pew in front of my family at Jacobs Chapel UMC. I always admired Doris as a person that I would looked up to in church. As I grew up, I became a teacher graduating from OLLU and Doris’ Soror. After leaving the area, I lost contact with her until I returned for my 50th class reunion in October 2019 and attended Sunday School at St. Paul UMC, as I usually do in my home city. Upon entering the class, there was Doris, someone that I hadn’t seen in over 43 years. Oh, how much joy I felt for seeing her once again for a few minutes in Sunday School.
Doris was a very angelic person. I am so saddened to read about her passing.
In memory of my Soror and former church member,
    Gwendolyn Williams Caviness
