CHARLENE GRANT

Charlene Grant was born in Hamburg, Arkansas, on May 25, 1938, to John Calvin Patrick and Cordell Hubbard Patrick. She was the third child of eight within this union. She is preceded in death by both parents and Sister Gloria Dean Patrick. Charlene leaves behind five children Cordell Banks, John Patrick, Larry Patrick, Davette Mabrie, and Dana Thomas, as well as six siblings, a host of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 As a young child, Charlene and her parents moved to San Antonio, TX, where she attended the local schools. Soon after, she began working as a domestic, until she left in 1967 to start a new life with her children in Los Angeles, California.

Moving to Los Angeles was one of Charlene's most significant accomplishment because it was there where she gained her full independence. While there, Charlene acquired job training and began her career as a PBX operator and a reservationist for Greyhound Bus. Also, during this time, she took care for her father until his death. Young women that lived in her neighborhood saw Charlene as a mentor to which she gained many honorary daughters.

In 1986, Charlene moved back home to San Antonio, TX to be closer to family. Here she worked different jobs but retired from Downtown Baptist Hospital as an environmental tech. During this time, she also took care for her mother for many years.

Charlene was a self-proclaimed bookworm, loved to travel and dance. She was also into the performing arts and enjoyed plays that ranged from Broadway musicals to Tyler Perry. Charlene loved to cook and was known for her famous mac and cheese. She believed in serving the Lord, so she dedicated her Saturday morning by making sure her church was sparkling clean. Charlene loved her family and friends dearly, and loved being in their presence.
