Carolyn Yvonne James was born to Celestine James and Doris Luddington James on October 9, 1951. She was the fourth child and oldest daughter; a natural leader from the very beginning. At an early age was destined to become an educator. A highly professional, devoted, educator she became.
Carolyn Yvonne McClure, a beacon of wisdom, compassion, and strength, peacefully passed away on February 22, 2025, at 4:21 p.m. She left a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
On July 18, 1992, she was united in holy matrimony to Donald Leon McClure, Sr. To this union, two children were born.
Mrs. McClure’s formative years were spent on the east side of San Antonio and raised in a Christian home. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and united with Greater Corinth where she became a life-time member. She worked faithfully as a religious orator, speech writer, and youth fellowship co-director.
She received her foundational education in the San Antonio Independent School District. She graduated from Sam Houston High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree from Southwest Texas State University (Texas State University). Additionally, she earned her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with a reading specialist certification, Supervision, and Mid-Management from University of Texas at San Antonio thus paving the way for a remarkable 39-year career in education.
Carolyn dedicated her life to shaping young minds, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal in San Antonio. Her time at Bowden Elementary as a beloved teacher and later as the principal of Cameron Elementary was marked by her unwavering commitment to her students and her passion for creating spaces where every child felt seen, valued, and empowered. Her dedication was recognized through numerous accolades, including being honoured in Who’s Who Among American Educators.
Beyond her professional achievements, Carolyn’s heart was her greatest gift. She was a source of endless encouragement, not only for her students, but for her family, friends, and community. She found joy in mentoring others, celebrating milestones, and ensuring that love and kindness were always at the forefront of everything she did.
Carolyn was preceded in death by both parents, her beloved husband, Donald McClure Sr., her cherished daughter, Dawn Celestia, brothers, Harold Eugene, Ralph Alvin, Kenneth LaRoy, and numerous aunts and uncles. Though their absence was deeply felt, she carried their memories with strength and grace.
In her passing, she leaves lasting and wonderful memories to her devoted son, Donald Leon McClure Jr., who carries forward her legacy of resilience and compassion. Carolyn is also survived by two brothers, Ronald Louis and Thomas Ray, her loving sister, Beverly Ann James; nephews: Clifford Joseph (Elizabeth), Keenan, Kenneth (Channary) and Shay; nieces: Shameka Ann (Elnora) and Angela.
She leaves numerous aunts, uncles, extended family, neighbours, and countless friends who were blessed to know her. In addition, her two dear friends, Ms. Patricia House and Ms. Diana Cardenas. All who are grateful to God for the 73 years He allowed her to be with us.
Carolyn’s life was a testament to the power of education, family, and community. Her laughter, wisdom, and gentle spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those she touched. While we mourn her passing, we also celebrate a life beautifully lived-a life that made the world a brighter and kinder place.
May her legacy continue to inspire us all.
Mrs. McClure was my fifth-grade teacher at Bowden Elementary. I still remember her casting me in the black history program and teaching us Lift Every Voice and Sing. I had the opportunity to work with her later in life as an adult when she moved on to principal. I hope to be just as good as an educator as she was. A legacy lives on. Bowden Bobcats.
