CAROLYN TARVER JONES

Carolyn Tarver Jones, 92, of San Antonio, Texas, transitioned to her new home with the Lord on March 8, 2021 from her home.

Carolyn was the second child of six born to Wilbur and Carrie Tarver in San Antonio on September 26, 1928.  She attended Grant Elementary and Dunbar Junior High School and graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School as class valedictorian. She graduated from Huston-Tillotson College Summa Cum Laude in 1948. She was selected as Ms. Tillotson her senior year. She later received her Master's Degree in Education from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

She married William Martin in June of 1947 in Austin, Texas. Two children, Patricia Eloise and Lillian Michelle were born to this union.

She worked as a teacher in Del Rio, Texas for 1 year, then returned to San Antonio to teach at Douglas Jr. High and James Whitcomb Riley Jr. High (now Martin Luther King Academy) in the English and Home Economics departments. She later taught English in the evening at St. Philips College. Carolyn Jones was an accomplished seamstress.  While in High School, she worked in a downtown dress shop helping to make suits for men and women.  She helped to make the dresses and trains for the Fiesta Queens Court. She made many wedding dresses, including her daughter, granddaughter and many others.

She married Dave Jones, Jr. April 14, 1960.

She continued to teach English for over 30 years in the San Antonio Independent School District, completing her teaching career at Edison High School.  She received numerous awards, where she was not only a Phi Delta Kappa Honoree, but has donated to their scholarship funds for many years.

and a charter teacher award from James Whitcomb Riley. Carolyn Jones was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church since 1960, where she served in various positions, including the usher board, Sunday School, and as a Vacation Bible School teacher, and was honored for her service by the General Baptist Mission Convention.

She was a proud diamond member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, in which she had previously served as secretary (grammateus).  She volunteered with the American Red Cross for several years.  Carolyn and her friends, Corrinne Walker and Vernice Warner, traveled to New Orleans to give clothes, blankets, food and money to those affected by Katrina.

She led the way for our family to become NAACP life members.

She was a member of several bridge clubs, including I-Bid-A-Club, Messieurs and Madames, and My Dear Bridge Club.  She was awarded Mother of the Year by the Altrusa Social Club.  Carolyn had a passion for traveling.  Some of the places she visited were China, Australia, London, Hawaii, and Alaska, as well as visiting several casinos, including Las Vegas, Coushatta, and Kickapoo.

She is survived by:

 Her children, Patricia Merritt and Dr. Lillian Jones,  Davette Whitaker, Imanette Sparks and Clayton Jones (Alisa).

Grandchildren: Anita Brown (Dan) and Myron Jones III (Krystal); Clayton Whitaker, Nicole Troxler (Timothy) Ted( Shannon)Sparks, and LaTasha Greene (Greg).

Great-grandchildren: Lauren Brown and Myron Jones IV; Joshua and Jada Troxler; Xavier Greene.

Nieces and Nephews: Connie (Donald) and Chris Wilson, Sheila Gaillard (Quentin) and Whitney Tarver, Robert Tarver and Cornita (Kevin) and Nicholas McDaniel, as well as many grand nieces and nephews, family and friends.
