ALTHEA MARIE HAZEL-BAINES

January 26, 1960 ~ April 25, 2019

Althea Marie Hazel was born to Hubert and Katherine Hazel on January 26, 1960. She was the first girl born into a family of 6 children. She grew up most of her years in Sutton Homes until her parents moved them to Gabriel Street. She was educated in the San Antonio Independent School District.

She was best known as Marie or “ReRe”.

In 1980, she met the love her life, Clarence Baines. Together they created 2 beautiful daughters, LaKisha and Georgia Baines. Together, they would go on to help raise countless young children who have grown to be awesome young women and men. Together they took care of their parents and became positive role models for their sisters, brothers, friends, and families. Their house became “The Hub” or “Safe Haven”, not just for family, but for friends as well. The house was known as “Marie’s House”, a spot that whenever you passed by, YOU HAD TO STOP! If you were a regular, then you knew the first rule: ”DO NOT COME OVER ON TUESDAY OR SUNDAY”, those days were reserved for “MARIE AND CLARENCE”! Everyone obliged! It never failed, to whomever “passed through”, a meal or a drink was always offered. THOSE ENCHILADAS, SAYS IT ALL!

She had a beautiful smile to go with her beautiful heart. She was a welcoming comfort to so many. She was an affectionate caregiver, and her clients loved her and the care that she displayed for them. Everyone has a story to tell of how she was there for them.

Marie accepted Christ at a young age at Mt. Sinai MBC, along with the whole of Bessie King family under Rev. Rufus Wilson. She later joined Hosack Ave Baptist Church under Rev. Ernest Roberts where she served faithfully until his passing. Marie loved the Lord. She recently reunited with Mount Sanai MBC under Pastor Gary Roberts. Even when she was unable to make it to church, she always made sure to send her tithes, she was faithful.

She is proceeded in this journey to live with Christ by her parents Katherine “Pithie” Hazel, Hubert “Big Tiny” Hazel, her brothers Clarence Perkins, Daniel “Boon” McNeil, and her daughter Andrea Steen, whom she loved and a host of aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and her grandparents.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband Clarence Baines, Daughters LaKisha (Peter) Hazel, Georgia Baines, Marquisha Freeman, one sister Dorthy Jean Perkins,3 nephews that she raised Bone, Brandon, and Steven,  Four Brothers, Freddrick Lee Holt (Nancy), Hubert “Tiny”or “Little Tiny” (Kim) Hazel, Larry Muriel Hazel, and Lester “Buster” (Martha) Hazel. Six grandchildren, Marlon, Clarence, Mercedes, Destiny, BJ, and Irie. One great-grand daughter Ja’Corya, two stepdaughters, Kristy and Shawna and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. There are so many loved ones, that everyone cannot be named. So many felt that she was “theirs”. One particular group that will miss her greatly, is her “SPADES” crew. Her two very special friends, Torlecsha & Shelia.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL SOUL!
