ALICE M. BENNETT

June 10, 1945 ~ April 9, 2023

Alice was born in San Antonio on June 10, 1945, the oldest of 9 children to Leon and Quincy Roberts. She was very responsible and smart; Alice was the apple of her father’s eye. She could get her father to do anything she wanted, because she was always trying to do everything, he wanted her to do. She loved to look nice. There was never a time when she was going out, no matter what the occasion, that she was not elegantly dressed. Her hair and make-up was always in place, so she always looked like the executive she was.

Alice attended public school in San Antonio and graduated from Sam Houston High School and was the first African American on the school’s pep squad. After graduation she attended St. Phillips College and was also employed with St. Phillips College for a few years.

Alice met and married the love of her life, Mack Bennett, and they were married 58 years. To that union one child was born, a son, Marlon Anthony Bennett.  Mack, Alice, and Marlon loved to travel together throughout his childhood.  During their marriage, Alice and Mack continued to travel and attended many functions, even a Presidential Inauguration.

Alice started her career at USAA in the Actuary Department. During her tenure, she was a founding member of the Board of Directors for the planning and implementing of the USAA Credit Union. She also joined the Alta Vista International Toastmistress and held several positions in the organization.  Upon retiring after 36 years, she became a life member of the USAA Golden Eagles. Once retired, she volunteered for the American Cancer Society walk for a few years then provided consistent care for her mother until she passed.

Alice received Christ at an early age and loved the Lord, His people, and working in the Church. Her church family, Greater Corinth Baptist Church always kept her busy with various ministries.  She was very active in the Women’s Ministry and she also served as the Youth Director for several years. The children referred to her as “THE COLONEL”.  Alice was an avid bible student who also mentored other young women.  She was a faithful Bible Study Fellowship student for several years.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents Leon and Quincy Roberts, sister Florence Roberts; brothers Melvin Roberts, Phillip Roberts, and Anthony Roberts and her niece, Karisha Harps.

Alice leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Mack Bennett, son Marlon Bennett; sisters: Brenda Burnley (Olester) and Tony Roberts of San Antonio Texas; Phyllis Boone (Donald Jr.),Toy Pinnix (Robert Jr.) of Houston Texas.

A host of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces, nephews, dear relatives and friends.

Guestbook

  1. Alice was wind beneath my wings during my tenure at USAA. She guided me on so many fronts. She pointed out the advantages of riding the van to work, drivers lived off Pecan Valley so I was picked up 1st, then circle around the Eastside to her off New Braunfels, various other stops and then on to the Big House. She was the ultimate fasionesta and modeled how to look and dress, she urged me to join ITC ( International Training in Communications/equivalent of Toastmasters) and learn and hold every office, which in turn enhanced my speaking performance, she supported every endeavor I undertook, especially working for several years with the Black History Choir and how to navigate that with the USAA historian. She demanded I take part n SIP, (savings investment plan) and made sure I matched appropriately my $$. She was the epitome of grace and elegance. She was longtime family friend and her deposits and mentorship impacted my life. Rest on my dear sista. Luv ya even n death! U kept da faith, ran da race, and finished ur course.

  2. My heart is broken. Alice was and will always be to me one of the most God Fearing, Faithful, Virtuous, Classy, Brilliant, Wise, Beautiful, Ambitions, Strong, Humble, Graceful and Fashion Icon that I have and will ever know! A real lady. More than friends, my family and yours were family. I love each of you.

  3. Alice always spoke her mind and was such a joy to have in our lives! We will forever hold her in our hearts and mind. Sleep well dear friend until we meet again.

  4. My heart is very heavy with pain, Alice and I attended both Jr. High and high school together. A friendship over 50 years. I shall miss her as long as I live, I am so blessed to have spoken to her only a few weeks ago. We shared many memories I hope to share more when I see her again in our HEAVENLY Home.

  5. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the Bennett Family. I didn’t know Alice well but she was very kind at family gatherings.

  6. My condolences to the Bennett family. I had the honor and privilege of working with Alice at USAA, and was very sad to learn of her passing. Such a wonderful lady, who will be missed by so many.
