His Story and Legacy

Eddie B. Scott was born on June 30, 1940, in Columbus, Georgia, to Dunlap Scott and Edna Bailey Scott. One of six children, he grew up alongside Ethel, Junior, Nicky, Havoline, and Erlene Scott-Payne.

Eddie accepted Christ at an early age in Georgia, establishing a foundation of faith that remained part of his life. He attended Mt. Sinai for a few years before leaving for a military assignment. His Christian upbringing helped shape his values and his belief in the importance of family, education, and service to others.

Eddie married Katherine Smith Scott on July 29, 1964, in San Antonio, Texas. Their union was blessed with three children: Sonya Scott-McCann, Terrence “Terry” Scott, and Cedric “CJ” Scott. Eddie later shared his life with his beloved wife, Reva Berry, and together they welcomed their son, Jeremy Scott.

Of all the roles Eddie held, being a father was one he took deeply to heart. He loved his children, believed in their potential, and offered advice, encouragement, and life lessons – whether requested or not. He taught them to value education, independence, and hard work. His love was often expressed through his guidance, expectations, and determination to see them succeed.

That commitment to his children’s growth reflected Eddie’s deep belief in education. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Education from Wayland Baptist University and encouraged young people to pursue opportunities, continue learning, and recognize their potential. His guidance reached beyond his family to soldiers, friends, and young people whose futures he helped shape.

Eddie was also a man of strong opinions, quick wit, and a personality all his own. Those closest to him lovingly called him a little ornery. He liked things done his way and stood firmly by his decisions, yet beneath that stubborn exterior was a man who cared deeply for his family and wanted the best for those he loved.

In quieter moments, Eddie appreciated life’s simple pleasures: a fine bourbon, fishing, woodworking, cooking, good conversation, and family gatherings. Whether offering advice, telling a story, or simply sharing time with those around him, he brought humor, determination, and a presence uniquely his own.

Eddie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Reva Berry, and his siblings Ethel, Junior, Nicky, and Havoline. He leaves a legacy carried forward by his sister, Erlene Scott-Payne; his children, Sonya, Terry, CJ, and Jeremy; and the many relatives, friends, soldiers, and young people touched by his love, guidance, and generosity.

A Life of Service

Raised in a military family, Eddie learned discipline, hard work, responsibility, and the importance of standing firm in what he believed. Those who knew him would agree that standing firm was something he did exceptionally well.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Dunlap, Eddie answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He devoted 30 years to honorable military service, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major, E-9 – one of the Army’s highest enlisted ranks.

Eddie led troops with strength, integrity, and compassion. He understood that true leadership meant more than giving orders. It meant setting the example, developing others, protecting those entrusted to his care, and ensuring that every soldier was prepared to succeed.

His career included service in military medicine, where his knowledge and leadership helped support the health, readiness, and well-being of others. His contributions were recognized with the Legion of Merit. He retired honorably on November 30, 1989, after three decades of faithful service to his country.

Eddie’s commitment to service continued after his military retirement. He was a proud Mason and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He carried the principles of brotherhood, duty, responsibility, and service into his community.

Eddie’s legacy is found not only in the rank he achieved or the honors he received, but also in the people he led, the lives he served, and the futures he helped shape. He taught that leadership is a responsibility, education is an opportunity, and a meaningful life is measured by how well we help others succeed.
