We gather to honor and celebrate the life of our loving brother, uncle, and dear friend, Burghardt Oswald Edwards Jr., who departed this life on May 10, 2026, at the age of 88 in San Antonio.

Born on March 5, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, Burghardt was the beloved son of the late Burghardt Edwards Sr. and Veola Edwards. A proud native of San Antonio, he carried the values of faith, hard work, compassion, and community throughout his life.

Burghardt honorably served in the United States Army, demonstrating dedication and service to his country. Following his military service, he built a career in sales, working as a sales representative for various companies, where his warm personality and genuine care for people made lasting impressions on everyone he encountered.

Burk, as he was known to family and friends, was a man of many talents and passions, who deeply loved jazz music. He found joy in playing the saxophone and piano, sharing his gift of music with family and friends. As a dedicated Democrat, he was proud to work on Barack Obama’s campaign for the presidency. He was also known for his love of cooking, often bringing people together through meals prepared with care and love.

Burk was a proud alumnus of Phyllis Wheatley High School, graduating with the Class of 1955. Throughout his life, he remained supportive of others and was known as someone who would help anyone he could.

To his nephew Marcus and many others, Burk was a guiding light — a source of wisdom, attentive care, encouragement, and unwavering support. His kindness, generosity, and compassionate spirit touched countless lives and will never be forgotten.

Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. May he rest in eternal peace.

He is preceded by his parents, and his siblings: Ruth Joy Deadrick, Bruce Edwards, Vee Edwards, and Anjanette Edwards.

He is survived by his sister, Velma Nanka- Bruce, his loving nephews: Marcus Nanka-Bruce, Marc Deadrick, and his nieces: Fatiyah Douglas, and Frankie Halima Edwards- Stevenson, and numerous other close relatives and friends.

  1. My deepest sympathy to the family. Burghardt had a warm and friendly personality. I knew his mother very well, as a devoted member of Second Baptist.
Well done thy good and faithful servant.
