A cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and dear friend, Mary Lee Young, passed into eternal rest on March 17, 2026, at the age of 79, just four months shy of her 80th birthday. She was born on August 14, 1946, in San Antonio, Texas, to her late parents, Albert Sutton and Ossie Ross.

She was a devoted and supportive military wife who found great joy in traveling and especially treasured the cruises she shared with her sisters. She also enjoyed shopping, dining out, attending concerts, bowling, sewing, and creating beautiful wreaths during the holiday season. An exceptional cook, her family especially loved her banana pudding, sweet potato pie, and enchiladas.

A proud alumna of Phyllis Wheatley High School, Class of 1964, she carried a lifelong love for her community and friendships. Her favorite color was red, a reflection of her vibrant spirit. She looked forward to her monthly “Sisters’ Lunch,” a cherished tradition that continues today. She was also a dedicated member of the Red Hat Society, joining in 2009 and remaining active for many years.

She worked for Luby’s Cafeteria before beginning her long and dedicated career with the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, where she served as a supervisor and retired after 28 years of faithful service.

Her love for family was unwavering. She had a special place in her heart for all of her grandchildren, including her grandson who required special care. She would transport him faithfully from school each day until his graduation—an act that reflected her deep compassion and devotion.

She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Calvin C. Young Sr., in 1966, sharing 59 years of love and devotion until his passing in 2022.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband; her sister, Margaret Robinson; and her brothers, Edward Ross and Charles Carter.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children: Anthony Sutton, Calvin Young Jr. (Francis), and Cassandra Young; five grandchildren who were the center of her heart; her siblings: Ella Dupree, Mary Ross, Jay Ross, and Jeff Ross; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

Her life was a beautiful example of love, strength, and devotion to family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

  2. Miss Mary, I was deeply saddened to learn of your passing, and I wish you only God‘s grace, comfort and love. I know you will make a wonderful addition to his heavenly garden and you will walk amongst the angels. I cannot thank you enough for the support, guidance and direction that you instilled in me, as well as all of those of us who were fortunate enough to work alongside of you. You were ever present for the young soldier who was just learning as well as the 30 year hardest steel man who came in looking for uniform accessories . You shown brightly when we had to do the unthinkable and that was help a family prepared their loved ones for their last journey. You will be forever part of my life‘s treasure chest and I thank you again for everything you did to support me through the challenging times that we faced. God speed miss Mary and I know those that you love and miss were waiting for you. Sincerely, always in my heart Patty.
