Born on July 27, 1936, in Cameron, Texas, Bobbye Jean Gates was the beloved daughter of Eugene Aycox and Eva Hancock Brooks. She was raised in Cameron, where she attended local schools and proudly graduated from Yomen High School in 1955. She was baptized at Cameron Grove Church of Christ and began a lifelong journey of faith and service.

She was blessed with a large and loving family. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Bro. Alphonso Gates; her daughter, Ivye Grace
Gates; and her twin sister, Bettye Wright, who passed on January 4, 2024.

On February 26, 1956, she united in holy matrimony with Bro. Alphonso Gates. Their union spanned 59 years, during which they built a strong
foundation rooted in faith, love, and family.

She was a devoted mother to Rita Vedessa Phillips (Jimmy Phillips, Jr.), Eric Lawrence Gates (Doreth Gates), and Alton Mark Gates. She leaves to
cherish her memory her grandchildren Jimmy Phillips, III; LaKesha Sanders; Shawn Phillips; Chantal Sturdivant (Eric Sturdivant), Devante Gates (Casey
Gates), DeJuan Gates, Latamarra Gates, Hannah Gates along with her great-grandchildren Quinton Phillips, Amari Goods, Gavin Sturdivant, Caia
Sturdivant, Elias Sturdivant, Cameron Gates.

She is also survived by her siblings: Gregory Brooks (Judy Brooks), Harry Brooks, Eva Gadson (Larry Gadson), and Livia Dixon, along with a host of
nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and dear friends.

A woman of dedication and hard work, she spent many years as a loving stay-at-home mother before entering the workforce. She was employed
with DTP, HEB, Crystal White Cleaners, AutoZone, and later served faithfully as a school crossing guard for over thirty years, where she was
known for her reliability, warmth, and care for the children in her community.

Her life was marked by faith, humility, service, and an unwavering love for her family. Her church homes included Cameron Grove Church of Christ
and Coliseum Park Church of Christ, before she ultimately found her spiritual home at Dellcrest Church of Christ. She leaves behind a legacy of
strength, perseverance, and devotion that will continue to live on through all who knew and loved her.

  5. I have many childhood memories of this family. From Emerson JH and then Spriggsdale Church of Christ (before the move). Brother and Sister Gates, Rita, Ivy, Eric and Mark I remember like yesterday. I was so great to see Sister Gates and Rita at the voting polls after years not seeing them. I loved our catch up, the new twin grands, and sister Gates voice. She will be missed. Sending condolences, prayers and love to the family.

We will never forget Sis. Gates beautiful soprano voice. My last memory of her beautiful voice was at my mom’s homegoing service. We lift you up to “the God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3-5).
