Juanita Yvonne “Nita” Young was a light – steady, bright, and deeply felt. Born on March 1, 1977, in Portsmouth, Virginia, and passing on September 24, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, she left behind a legacy of intelligence, compassion, and unwavering faith that will continue to shine through everyone who knew and loved her.

To know Nita was to experience warmth. She carried a quiet strength and a thoughtful grace that made others feel seen and cared for. Her laughter could fill a room, and her curiosity about life and learning was endless.

Education was one of her greatest joys. She was a dedicated scholar with a passion for science, earning multiple degrees including an Associate of Applied Science in Histopathology from St. Philip’s College, an Associate of Science in Biology, and an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts from San Antonio College. At the time of her passing, she was still reaching higher – pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Nita’s pursuit of knowledge was never about titles; it was about discovery, excellence, and the desire to understand the world God created.

Her professional life reflected that same dedication. As a histopathology technician, she brought precision, focus, and compassion to her work. She was a proud member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology and took great pride in her contribution to the scientific community.

But Nita’s greatest impact was not in the lab – it was in the lives she touched. She was a natural teacher, guiding with patience, encouragement, and love. She poured herself into homeschooling her niece, Brooke, ensuring she not only learned, but thrived. Her teaching was never just academic; it was spiritual, emotional, and deeply personal.

In her personal time, she found joy in simple pleasures – cooking and baking for those she loved, organizing events, and finding new ways to learn and grow. Recently, she had taken up studying French and revisiting chemistry courses, a reflection of her endless curiosity and discipline.

Nita’s faith was her anchor. Baptized at New Light Baptist Church and later joining New Creation Church, she remained steadfast in her devotion to God. Even when she couldn’t be present in the sanctuary, the Word was present in her heart. Her faith carried her, and through it, she carried others.

She leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her close in spirit: her mother, Valarie Y. Crawford; her brothers Xavier D. Young and Brett I. Crawford; her grandmother Juanita B. Young; her aunts Rosie E. Harrison, Shirley Thompson and Rachel Neal-Muhammad; her uncles Moses Young III, Larry Young (Bernina), Kenneth D. Young, Xavior Warden (Teresa), Darrell Morgan, Johnny Kelly (Linda), Clyde Thompson (Lynn), Larry Brown Sr., Andrew J. Young (Teresa); her nieces Brooke and Aaliyah; her nephew Gabriel; her cousins Milo, Tanya, Jameelah, Fagbemi, Del Ray, Travis, Barbara, Sierra, Veronica, Christian, Jessica, Musa, Farrakhan, and Hakeem along with a host of other family.

She is reunited in peace with her father, Robert L. Thompson; her grandfathers, Moses Young Jr. and Shelton Thompson; her grandmother, Mary Kay Thompson; her aunt, Eartha Thompson Glover; and her cousin, Portia D. Logan.

Though her time here feels far too short, Nita lived deeply and loved completely. Her kindness, her curiosity, her laughter, and her faith will forever ripple through the hearts she touched.

Her journey was not just one of achievement but of love – love for her family, for her faith, and for life itself. She was, and will always be, a reminder that brilliance and gentleness can live in the same soul, and that even after one’s voice grows quiet, their light never fades.

  1. My dearest niece, though we never had the chance to meet in this earthly life, please know that my heart holds a special place for you. It seems it was not God’s plan for our paths to cross here, but I am filled with a profound certainty that as children of God, our spirits will indeed unite in the next. May your journey be one of unparalleled beauty and brightness, fulfilling every dream and imagination you held. As it is written in 2 Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.”
