Elisha Nelson, Jr. lived a life marked by steady faith, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to the people and values he held dear. On June 30, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, he transitioned from this life, leaving behind a legacy rooted in family, service, and love that will continue to shape generations to come. He was 91 years old.
Born on June 25, 1934, in Como, Mississippi, to Lucille (Edwards) and Elisha Nelson, Sr., Elisha carried both his father’s name and the quiet strength that defined their family. He also shared the name of the prophet Elisha — known in scripture as a faithful successor and servant of God. In many ways, Elisha, Jr. lived true to that legacy — following in his father’s footsteps, and walking through life with steady faith, devotion, and a heart for serving others.
After enlisting in the United States Air Force, Elisha built a proud 24-year career that took him across the world and ultimately to Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, where he retired with honor. It was during those years of service that his most cherished partnership began — a nearly six-decade union with Ruth Ann Thornton. Together, they built a life anchored in love, faith, and devotion. It was in Alaska that they raised their daughters and instilled in them the values of integrity, discipline, and family.
Even after laying down his military uniform, Elisha never set aside his commitment to serve — or to grow. During his years in Alaska, he earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alaska — a personal accomplishment that reflected his belief in hard work, education, and always striving for more. He also became an active member of the Kiwanis Club — investing his time and energy into supporting youth programs and strengthening the community he loved. He held the highest offices within the Masonic Temple and the Shriners, organizations rooted in fellowship, service, and charity. His involvement reflected not only his deep sense of responsibility but his belief in building up others, often behind the scenes and without fanfare.
Later, Elisha and Ruth Ann made their home in San Antonio, Texas, where his steady presence became a cornerstone of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. For over 30 years, he poured his time and talents into the church — serving as Senior Warden, usher, photographer, and a constant source of encouragement and support. His contributions were never about recognition, but about responsibility, faith, and quietly lifting others up.
Away from church and community, Elisha found joy in a game that mirrored much of his approach to life — golf. It’s a game of patience, precision, and composure — qualities that defined him both on and off the course. He found joy not only in playing but in sharing the game with those he loved — teaching his son-in-law the fundamentals, enjoying rounds with his nephew and his niece’s husband, and reminding everyone that both golf — and life — are best navigated with respect, humility, and a steady hand.
But it was in the company of family where Elisha truly came alive. His love for family reunions and gatherings was unmistakable, and his infectious laugh could fill a room and linger in
memory. Whether offering quiet wisdom, sharing stories, or simply being present, he created space for connection, love, and joy.
Elisha was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and Elisha Sr.; his brother, Oliver Nelson; and his sister, Jewel Nelson.
Those carrying forward his legacy include his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, Ruth Ann Nelson (née Thornton); his daughters, Elisa-Ruth Nelson (Melvin Gilchrist) and Eliesha Gabrielle Nelson; and his cherished grandson, William Elisha Cline, who proudly carries forward both the name and enduring strength of his grandfather. He is also survived by his sisters, Cora Lee Harper and Estella Crawford (Draymond); his Aunt Arlene Nelson; his sister-in-law, Fredrika Pharr; his wife’s uncle, Dr. David L. Fields (Marian); and a loving host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
The prophet Elisha once prayed, “Let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” — 2 Kings 2:9. It is a reminder that even when one’s earthly journey ends, what they poured into others — their wisdom, their love, their example — carries on. The life Elisha Nelson, Jr. lived continues in those who were shaped by his steady presence, his quiet guidance, and his unwavering devotion to family and faith.
His earthly course may be complete, but his legacy — grounded in family, generosity, and a life well-lived — continues to guide and inspire all who knew him.
