MARYLAND A JONES

July 14, 1947 ~ April 13, 2025

Maryland A. Jones, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, was born in St. Louis, Missouri to James and Pearl O. Powe on July 14th, 1947. Her presence brought comfort, her words brought wisdom, and her life brought joy to all who knew her until her untimely passing on April 13th 2025.

Throughout her life, Maryland worked in several supporting and supervisory roles, each reflecting her passion of service and people. She began as a nurse’s aide, offering care and comfort to those in medical need. She later worked as a medical transcriber, eventually being promoted to Supervisor and was even a part time travel agent—roles that showcased her attention to detail and her curiosity about the world. Eventually, she found her calling as Director of Volunteer Services, where she spent XX years empowering others to give back, created programs and a legacy and built lasting connections throughout the community.

She was directly responsible for aiding the Air Force in supporting deployed troops in Iraq at Balad Air Force Base, Panama for Operation Just Cause  and both Desert Storm and Desert Shield.  She spearheaded projects to receive donations of much needed items like socks and toiletries, even raised money to cover shipping.  She collaborated with AT&T to get thousands of prepaid phone cards in the hands of our troops when long distance lines were not available for them to reach their loved ones during the 1990’s.  She was credited with saving the Air Force millions of dollars every year with thousands of Volunteer hours documented through her programs.

Maryland also loved cooking for her family, often filling her home with delicious meals and warm laughter. Everyone gathered at her house for every holiday.  Her pound cakes, greens, sweet potato pies, peach cobbler, ribs and deviled eggs were infamous.  She had a creative spirit following in her mothers footsteps making Sorority and Fraternity shirts, button covers, dolls and of course those infamous pillows.  She loved finding ways bringing a personal, loving touch to everything she did.

She was the very proud mother of three daughters, Cozette M. Turner, Yvette R. Robinson (Carl), and Charlette E. Jones – McDonald, loving grandmother to seven grandchildren, Carolyn J. Adams (Todd), Tyler J. Turner, Jorden Robinson, Tyson D. Turner, Joshua Robinson, Travian T. Turner, Chloe S. McDonald and  great-grandmother to two great-grandchildren Judea and Theo. Maryland is also survived by her sister Gwendolyn R. Nance, brother Michel A. Bordeaux and her entire loving family, who will forever treasure her memory. Her family was the heart of her world, and she leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion.

Maryland will be remembered for her kindness, and the many ways she made the world a better place simply by being in it. Her life was a light in the lives of many, and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the family she held so dear.
