On January 29, 2025 Shirley Grace Whitfield, born October 23,1940, was called home and embraced by her father John D. Whitfield, Sr., mother Bessie Whitfield, stepmother Virgie Whitfield, sisters Lillie Roumo, Johnnie Orr, Mildred Harris, Irma Givens, and brothers Eugene Whitfield, John D. Whitfield Jr. and stepbrother Charles Williams. She is survived by her sister-in-law Ella Whitfield (John D. Whitfield, Jr.) and numerous nieces and nephews who have been honored to have her as a Bonus Mom.
Shirley moved to San Antonio, where after completing college began working as a dietician at Santa Rosa Hospital. She retired in 2014 from Christa Santa Rosa after 50-years of dedicated service. From her time there she built many longtime friendships, and she would want those who survived her to know she kept them near and dear to her heart.
She was a devout member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, where she attended every Sunday she was not working, and every Sunday after she retired until her health made it a challenge to do so. She has shared many fond memories of church pastors and church members who have gone ahead of her. She leaves her gratitude and appreciation to those who checked in on her when she had to slow down.
She lived in Meadowview subdivision for 60 years, where anyone who grew up in the area affectionately called her Aunt Shirley. She was always a good neighbor and a good friend. While her passing seems to have come suddenly, she had a good life, she loved a lot of people, and was loved by even more. Shirley Grace Whitfield, sunrise October 23, 1940 – sunset January 29, 2025.

The Bell Family
Aunt Shirley will be greatly missed! I will always remember her as my Aunt Barbara’s very best friend. Always an adventure with the two of them. Rest well, Aunt Shirley!
My condolences to you and the family. I met Aunt Shirley at the tender age of 12, from that meeting she became part of my family. I’m going to miss you. You are forever loved.❤️❤️❤️
To The Roumo Family,
On behalf of my mother, Minnie Lee Dilworth, and the rest of our Dilworth, Crawford and Forney families, please accept our deepest condolences with the passing of your beautiful, loving, kind and intelligent Aunt Shirley Whitfield. We’ve had the pleasure of knowing your Aunt for 60 wonderful years!! She was a great addition to our subdivision and we loved spending time with her. In a way, she also seemed like a second mother to her sister’s, Lillian’s, six children, whom she loved with all of her heart. Aunt Shirley was one of God’s greatest blessings to everyone!! May she rest in eternal peace is our humble prayer.
Condolences to the family of Shirley Whitfield who I knew affectionately as “Aunt Shirley”. It was such a blessing to witness the 60 year friendship the she and my Aunt Barbara Warren Hodges shared. They had a true sisterhood and a friendship that will never be forgotten. We will miss the many laughs we shared with Aunt Shirley and her unique sense of humor. May she rest in eternal peace knowing that she was loved on this side of heaven. Thank you to her family for sharing her with our family for so many years! Love Always from the Warren family.
