Eva Pearl Thompson, affectionally known as Pat, age 90, she was born on June 12, 1934, to the union of Mary Etta Edwards and Ira James Thompson. Eva is preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, Joan Blackley Brown, and daughters Eva Royetta Burrows and Althea ‘Sue Sue’ Hawkins. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Linda Mills (Texas); sons, Johnny (Amy) Hawkins, and Clarence Hawkins Jr. (Hawaii); grandchildren, Marcus, Naomi (Delando), Kenneth Jr., Elijah, Tiffany, Warren, Abigail, Julius, Toki, Misha, Royce and Barry Joseph (Ana); great-grandchildren, Naomi, (Trevor), Myah, Delando Jr., Delilah, Delencia, Elijah Jr., Sharee, Melina, Jamaal, Willow Rose, Winter Rain, Weslyn Reya, Winona Ruby, and Eva; and great-great-grandchildren, Caleb and Jalen, Oasis, and Renae. Eva leaves a host of other family, to include half-brothers and sisters, her 100-yr old Aunt Tracie Sweeny, cousins Willie Clemons Jr. and Don Rell Dean, as we as a host of loving friends.
A graduate of Phyllis Wheatley High School in San Antonio, Texas, Eva briefly attended St Phillips Jr. college before meeting and marrying the love of her life. On August 1, 1952, Eva was married to Clarence E. Hawkins, a Soldier in the U.S. Army. Out of that union were born five children: Eva Royetta Burrow (deceased), Linday Joyce Mills, Johnny Edward Hawkins, Clarence Elroy Hawkins Jr., and Althea Marie Hawkins.
After their wedding, they transferred to their first duty station in El Paso, TX in 1952. While stationed in El Paso, Texas, she attended college and worked for the U.S. Army Child Development Center for 7 years until the U.S. Army transferred the family to, Germany, Presidio, CA and the Hawaiian Islands. She lived with her husband and 5 children in Hawaii for 4 years before being transferred back stateside to San Antonio, TX where she lived until the death of Staff Sergeant Clarence Hawkins April 1981.
Eva lived and worked in Presidio, CA where she earned teaching her credentials. Moving back to El Paso, in1970, Eva worked as manager of a day care center and later a substitute teacher. Eva moved back to San Antonio, TX in 2004 where continued to work as a substitute teacher for the San Antonio Independent School District until her retirement in 2019.
Eva’s Christian journey began at age 17 San Antonio, TX and she accepted the Lord as her personal savior in 1974, she became an active member of Greater Mount Calvary, COGIC in El Paso, Texas, under the leadership of Elder Roosevelt Odom. Up moving to San Antonio in 2004, Eva served faithfully as a member and District Evangelist Missionary at East End Church of God in Christ (COGIC) led by Reverend Fred T. Ervin and First Lady Redell Ervin.
Eva’s life was a testament to selflessness, devotion, hard work, and love. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew her. In her “wishes”, recorded (by her via typewriter) on Friday, May 2, 2008, Eva requests “no serious crying” upon her passing.
I send my sincere condolences to my friend Ms. Linda Mills and het family. Mama stole my heart from the first time I met her. She was such a sweet lady with a loving personality. God truly added a beautiful ROSE to his garden. Sis. Linda may God comfort and strengthen you and your family. Love you all.
