Ernestine McMillion, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 1, 2024. Born May 1, 1933, in rural Alabama, Ernestine overcame tragic beginnings when she lost her mother at the young age of 3. She was raised by her paternal grandmother. She met and married SSgt. (ret) Edgar McMillion and lived the life of a military wife tending to her family while he was deployed to war. After multiple moves, Ernestine and Edgar settled in San Antonio, Texas which became home for the McMillion family.
Ernestine first joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev Graham. She was a beacon of love, faith, and service throughout her life. She went back to school after rearing her children to achieve her GED. She continued her education to receive her vocational nursing license and practiced at Baptist Downtown on nights for over 2 decades.
Ernestine dedicated her professional life to nursing, where she provided care and comfort to countless individuals with compassion and dignity. Her commitment to her faith was unwavering. She was a devoted member of Mt Calvary Baptist Church under Rev C. Victor Herbin, Jr, where she participated in numerous church activities and served her community with a gentle and humble spirit. She served as Sunday School superintendent, Vacation Bible School teacher, and was a member of the mission. She was committed to continual learning and enrolled in a summer theology course at Alamo Community Church seven years in a row.
A cherished mother of six and grandma to 11 and great-grandma to 16 and great-great grandma to 1, Ernestine was a quiet and loving matriarch whose family was her pride and joy. Her life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path,” Proverbs 3:5-6, which she demonstrated through her actions every day.
Ernestine will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents Lea Davis and Willie Blanchard, her son Tommy McMillion, her husband Edgar McMillion, her grandson Jason McMillion, and granddaughter Christina McMillion. She is survived by her children: James (Leslie) McMillion, Michael McMillion, Peggy (Joseph) Ramsey, Donald (Brenetta) McMillion, and Ronald McMillion; grandchildren: James (Davina) McMillion, Tom (Kara) McMillion, Jr, Tonya McMillion, Tasha McMillion, Donald McMillion, Jr, Donell McMillion, Christopher Daniels, Tracee Short, and Anthony (Natasha) Snell; great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends who were blessed to know her.
Funeral Services for Ernestine will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at 12pm. Interment will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery following services. A public viewing will be at Lewis Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, from 5-7pm.
Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate Ernestine McMillion's remarkable life. Her legacy of kindness, humility, and devout faith will continue to inspire and guide those she has left behind.
Mrs. McMillion volunteered at Normandy Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center sometime between 1998 and 2000 as I recall. She may have volunteered much longer than that. She was a real advocate for the patients. She made sure that the residents needs were cared for in such a way as not to be intimidating to anyone. She would tell staff that things should be done a certain way. She treated the residents as though they were family, even taking time to feed them. She had a sweet and kind spirit. She raised children that were thoughtful, kind and had integrity at a young age. I am sorry for your loss James, Mike, Peggy, Ronald, Donald and all of her other family and friends. May GOD bless and keep you at this difficult time.
Sending sincere condolences to your family. She is in heaven in the presence of our Father Jehovah.
