On April 14, 2024, at the age of 74, Jacquelyn A. Harris, peacefully gained her wings. Joining her love exactly 18 months to the day.
She was born December 3, 1949, to John T. Miller and Winona J. Miller (Williams). She was the fourth child and only girl born to this union. She accepted Christ at an early age. As an adult, she rededicated her life to Christ and joined St. Paul UMC. There, she served on the usher board and was usher board secretary for many, many years until her health no longer allowed her to continue.
She attended Elizabeth Tynan Elementary School, Samuel Gompers Middle School in Los Angeles and graduated from G.W. Brackenridge High School in 1968, where she was a proud member of The Purple Jackets pep squad. After graduation she attended St. Philip's College.
She united in marriage with Bruce B. Harris, May 1969. After a few years apart, they remarried Valentine's Day 1995 and were together 27 years until his passing. To this union, their one and only child was born, Alayne Latrice.
Jackie and Alayne were afforded the opportunity to move to Dover, Delaware for 4 years. It was there she was able to pursue and obtain her B.S. in education from Delaware State University (an HBCU), graduating in 1978. After leaving Dover, they relocated to Yokota Air Force Base, Japan. She was able to begin her teaching career at the nursery school on base. Upon returning to San Antonio, she was immediately hired by SAISD, beginning her career at Connell Middle School. From here, her next school was Tynan Elementary and from there, she retired from Jeff Davis, after 23 years in the district.
After retirement, she took a little time off before accepting the position of church secretary at St. Paul and retired from there after serving approximately 10 years. Later, she volunteered filling the church secretary duties as needed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her honey, Bruce, brothers John Jr and Johnny Ray, Nephews Victor and Victor, Jr.
She leaves behind her daughter Alayne (Detrick), grandchildren Dominique, Malakia, Myles and Detrick. The one that shares her love of shiny shoes and her personal mail person, great-granddaughter, Naleya Clay. Her remaining brother, Rufus Leon and his children and grandchildren, Monique, Shawn, Raymisha and Shawn Jr. Special cousin, who was more like a sister, Kathryn Nichols. Longtime friends, Arna Clark, Alta Hines and Karla Broadus. God-daughters Jaquelyn Steidel-Santiago (her namesake) and Sanae Hines. A host of cousins, friends and church family whom she loved dearly.
We take comfort that she's resting in the arms of our Lord.
To the Harris family, you have my deepest condolences. We have been blessed to know such a beautiful person inside and out. I ask the Lord’s blessing for you and may He comfort your hearts.
What a very warm and caring person. She was always very kind to me and my family. I loved her beautiful smile and pleasing disposition. The last conversation I had with her was when she was working to update the church’s member mailing and contact information. She will definitely be missed by many.
