LORETTA W. AMERSON

May 27, 1936 ~ June 1, 2023

Loretta Ann Walker Amerson, a retired educator, passed away on June 1, 2023, at the age of 87. She was the younger of two daughters born to James Earl Walker and Lucille Russell Walker in Floresville, Texas. As a young girl, her family moved to San Antonio where they settled on the eastside of the city in an area known as Denver Heights.

After completing her education in the local public school system that included Phillis Wheatley High School, Loretta received her bachelor’s degree from Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas.

Mrs. Amerson retired from the San Antonio Independent School District, after over 30 years, and she is still remembered for her dedication to her students’ and encouraging them to do their best.

She comes from a legacy of notable military veterans, Black cowboys, educators, church and community leaders. Domestics and caretakers also played a part in her development and strong work ethic.

Besides being a devoted wife to her high school sweetheart, Tommy Amerson, of 60 years, and loving mother, she was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Her roots in the United Methodist Church span four generations. She was unwavering in her faith and discipleship.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children Mark Amerson, Pamela (Terrence) Coleman, Rev. Melvin Amerson and Rev. James Amerson.
