Nellie Marie Bowden Massey, November 27, 1933 – October 8, 2021 was born in Goldsboro North Carolina to Frank Bowden & Sil Beulah Bowden Ferrell. She graduated from Richard B. Harrison High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Fayetteville State Teachers College in May of 1955. She met Alton Glenwood Massey at the age of 16 and they married August 13th 1955.
Nellie taught school for a total of 31 years, 22 years in the state of Texas and 9 years in other states and abroad. When she first came to San Antonio, she taught for 2 years in the Edgewood School District. She then spent 20 years teaching at Bowden Elementary School in the San Antonio Independent School District before retiring in May 1995.
Nellie dedicated her life to Christ at an early age. Her and Alton had been members of Resurrection Baptist Church since 1991.
She was the matriarch of the entire family fondly known as: Mother, Grandma, Grandma Nell, Aunt Maria, Sis, Aunt Sis and Cousin Sis.
Nellie is preceded in death by her parents Sil Beulah Bowden, Frank Bowden and step father Tucker Ferrell, her Loving and dedicated husband of 64 years Alton Massey, brothers Leron Ferrell, Frank (Bud) Bowden, William Earl Bowden, Joe Bowden, sisters Beulah Bowden and Elizabeth Edwards.
She is survived by her only remaining sibling Gloria Williams, daughters Lois Marie Williams, Anita Y. Patterson-Powell (husband Tyrone), Diona Wilson-Burks (husband Dell) Grandchildren Dr. Mohktar Morgan (wife Danielle), Pastor Charisma Bythwood (husband Willie), Michelle Patterson (Orlando), and Anniyah Brianna Burks. She has 10 great grandchildren. She has left to cherish her memory many nieces, nephews, family and friends.





Mother, you were a remarkable & strong woman. I learned SO much from you. My strength not only comes from GOD but from YOU. I watched you be strong to the end & I will carry the strength, love with me FOREVER. I love you Mother & will miss you
