On July 31, 1940 at 3 a.m. in San Antonio, Texas Wilbur Hunter Satterfield was born to Oddie V. and Wilma Satterfield. He was the 2nd of 5 children born to that union.
Wilbur joined the New Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at an early age. He was baptized there by the late Rev. V.M. Bailey and grew in his faith alongside his family.
He attended Booker T. Washington Elementary, Douglas Middle School, and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1958. Throughout his academic career, Wilbur remained on the honor roll, and is noted for being the President of his high school senior class. He also had accolades of being an accomplished athlete, affectionately known by classmates and added to his name in the class yearbook as “Candylegs!” One of his greatest attributes was his ability to brighten up any room with his infectious laugh and contagious sense of humor. He was well loved and admired by all who knew him.
On April 13, 1960 at the age of 19 he married his high school sweetheart Luberda Patrick. To this union 3 children were born, Wilbur Hunter Satterfield Jr., Tambra Shae Satterfield, and Michael DuShon Satterfield.
His family and those who employed him and were employed with him knew Wilbur to be a hardworking man. His job history dates back to his childhood when he and his brother Archie created an entrepreneurial lawn service. He moved from cutting lawns to bagging groceries at Handy Andy’s, and from bagging to being a personal chauffeur for the owner of Maxwell Myers Music Distribution Company, and finally to being hired in 1973 as a Switchman-Brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired after 40 years as a railroad Conductor in 2009.
He was proceeded in death by his father Oddie V. Satterfield Sr., his Mother Wilma Satterfield, his Sister Dannie Lee Satterfield Hicks, his Brother Oddie V. Satterfield Jr., and his Brother Archie Howard Satterfield.
He leaves to cherish his memory his Son Wilbur Hunter Satterfield Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, his Daughter Tambra Shae Satterfield of San Antonio, Texas, his Son Reverend Michael DuShon Satterfield (Wife Rhonda Satterfield) of Arlington, Texas, his Sister Doris Dixon of Los Angeles, California, his Sister Martha Lee (Husband Robert Lee) of San Antonio, Texas, his Brother Kermit Wesley Satterfield of San Antonio, and his Sister April Simmons of Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Satterfiled. My name is Bob Moore. My nickname on the railroad was Buzzard. Your husband was such and wonderful man to me and brought me up in the railroad as if I was his son. When I heard of his passing it brought me to tears as when we’d first met I was only 18 years old. He along with others took me under there wing and raised me as back then it was not possible for a young man like me to get off work for any function whether is was holidays or family events. He would teach me all that he knew to stay safe and alive in a very dangerous work environment. I remember my days with him very well and the fun I would have with him at our away from home terminal in Taylor as I said I was just a kid and he would tell me to come with him I needed a good ole fashion fun. He’d take me to some really neat places where people would stare at me cause I was the only white person there but he knew everyone and they all treated me with such kindness. Some of places we’d eat at were amazing and I shared those with others. We’d play pool and have a couple of beers before we called it a day and then went back to work the next day coming home. As time went on I got married, with two children and he’d give me a big education on them and what to expect as I said I was still young and in my 20’s. I ended up becoming an Engineer and Uncle Wilbur would be my conductor and we’d talk about family and the days of long ago and laugh a lot. I’m 66 now, retired as of 2017 and I weep a lot for you and your husband. He was such a very kind man to me. I am so very sorry that I will not be able to make his arrangements here but to please share this with your family. I loved your husband like a father and will never forget him and his advice that kept me going throughout my railroad career.Â
With my very sincerest respect,
BUZZARDÂ Â
