ZELMA J. HARGROVE SHANNON

July 10, 1950 ~ December 20, 2020

Zelma Jean Hargrove was born to William B. Hargrove and Zelma G. Hargrove in San Antonio, Texas.  Zelma and her twin sister, Wilma were the only children born to this union.  Zelma went to be with the Lord the 20th day of December 2020.

Zelma accepted Christ at an early age.  Zelma united with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. J. J. Rector Sr., and continued her membership under the leadership of Dr. E. T. Thurman Walker and presently Rev. Dr. Kenneth R. Kemp. She served with Voices of Antioch, Sanctuary Choir, Mission Chorus, Clara Byais Sunday School Class, J. J. Usher Board and the City-Wide Mass Choir, under the leadership of Gary Wayne Givens.  Zelma loved the Word.  She favored Hebrews Chapter 11 and would paraphrase by stating, “By faith, grace is why I am living. Keep your eyes on the Lord, and you won’t lose sight of life’s purpose”.

Zelma graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1969 and later went to San Antonio Business College. Zelma was an active member of the Phillis Wheatley Class of 1969.

Zelma married Harold Gene Arceneaux. One son was born to their union, Derrick Lamont Arceneaux.  Zelma later married Charles B. Shannon, who proceeded her in death, in 2003.  Together they worked in our surrounding city on numerous community projects, where they have both been recognized for their efforts.

Zelma had an extensive work life, but her first love was her in-home daycare, “Z’s Care”, where she nurtured many of San Antonio youth, well into adulthood.

She continued her work with children, caring for students with special needs for the San Antonio ISD for a number of years until retirement.  Zelma was a sweet spirit who never met a stranger and always did what she could for others.

Zelma leaves to cherish her memory her son, Derrick L. Arceneaux [Monica]; grandchildren, Oriana Arceneaux, Derrick L. Arceneaux, Jr., Jaiden Arceneaux; sister, Wilma J. Lewis{Clint Lewis, Latoya Lewis-Davis}; and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, many sister-friends, neighbors and friends, too numerous to name.

Zelma was truly loved and we will sincerely miss her presence.  However, she has reminded us never to put a question mark where God has placed a period.

Rest on sweet Zelma.  You have gained your sweet relief.
