Alton Glenwood Massey, February 23, 1934 – September 22, 2019 was born in Princeton North Carolina to Cleophus & Beulah Massey. He graduated from Richard B. Harrison High school & joined the United States Army in 1953. He met Nellie Marie Bowden at the age of 16 and they married August 13th 1955. While in the military he was educated in Basic and Advanced Laboratory Procedures, Faculty Development and Advanced Unit Blood Bank Technical Courses. He retired as a Sergeant First Class from the United States Army in 1973 as a Medical Laboratory Specialist, receiving a Good Conduct Medal & National Defense Service Medal.
Alton worked part-time at Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital while in the ARMY before retiring. He started working full-time in the Blood Bank department at Bexar County Hospital (now University Health System) in 1973. He retired from University Hospital in 1994.
While working full-time he attended school and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Professions from Southwest Texas State University in 1981.
Alton saw a need for the county hospital to have rapid access for their own blood supply since they were a major trauma center. Alton played a key role in the development of the donor center that is a thriving resource for this community to this day.
Alton dedicated his life to Christ at an early age. He and his wife Nellie have been members of Resurrection Baptist Church since 1991. He's always had a passion for singing and was a valued member of the male chorus. The members of the male chorus fondly called him "SUPERSTAR"
Alton is preceded in death by his parents Cleophus and Beulah Massey, sister Lois (Massey) Howard, and brother Leon Massey.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Nellie B. Massey, daughters Lois Marie Williams, Anita Y. Patterson (husband Michael-deceased), Diona Wilson-Burks (husband Dell). Sister Lila Williams and brother-in-law Leroy Williams. Grandchildren Dr. Mohktar Morgan (wife Danielle), Charisma Bythwood (husband Willie), Michelle Patterson (Orlando), and Anniyah Brianna Burks. Cousin Marie.
May God grant you strength & peace during this time of adjustment. Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal! Mom probably said, Alton, what are you doing here.Â
May God continue to bless & keep you in his care.
Merwyn K. Smith (cousin)
I will always remember Mr Massey’s smile and laughter. He was my backyard neighbor and the father of my best friend. I am blessed to have known him and will always cherish his memory. May God’s grace be with his family. Love and blessing, Terry

I will always remember my brother and fellow RBC male chorus member, Bro. Massey. He was a true gentleman and a man I will always remember. My sincere condolences to the family.
Brother Massey will truly be missed as one of our RBC Male Chorus Leaders who sat the standard for us, a great guy to have on your team. Our prayers are now with his family and friends and may God give them the strength they now need during this sad time. Â Â Â
Bro. Massey encouraged me to sing and lead songs in the RBC Male chorus.
We led songs together and I will never forget those great memories while singing for the Lord.
My deepest sympathy.
