DORIS L. HEMPHILL DRIVER

August 29, 1934 ~ July 18, 2019

 

Doris Hemphill Driver was born August 29, 1934 to the late Manuel Hemphill and Lois Smith (Hemphill) in San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband James L. Driver, her son Michael Mackey, and brother Winston Hemphill.

Guided in deep and abiding faith in God she served her church (East St. Paul United Methodist Church). She also took pride in stating that she was an associate member of Antioch Baptist Church. 

Doris attended local public schools; Cuney, Douglass and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1953. She also attended St. Philips College and received her Bachelors of Science degree from Huston-Tillotson University in 1958.

Doris served in the private sector in early childhood development at Stephens Kindergarten. She later transferred to San Antonio Independent School District, where she served as an elementary teacher for thirty years. Doris married James L. Driver, Sr. in 1958; to this marriage, James L. Driver, Jr. was born.

 Doris was loving and free spirited, to know her was to love her. She was a member of several organizations, some of which are: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Mothers Services Organization, Eastside Optimist Club, Huston-Tillotson University Alumni Association, San Antonio Area Retired Teachers Association and many others.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, James L. Driver, Jr. ; his wife Mary; granddaughters Sophia Carrejo and Siara Carrejo and furry companions Bailey and Mateo; a host of loving and devoted nieces and nephews and a loving foster sister Olva Mackey, may she rest in peace in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

To the Bereaved Family;  I shall always remember Mrs. Driver as a very gracious and beautiful person.  A couple of years back, I used to make it a point to join her for lunch at District 2 Senior Center and sit at the table with her.  It pleased me that she remembered me.  May she rest in peace. Extending my condolences and remembering you in Prayer.

  3. Ms Driver was my elementary school teacher. She was so nice and had so much patience ♥️ such a good teacher. I will never forget her. I know she loved her job as a teacher very much. She will never be forgotten. May she rest in peace ❤️
