LESTER GREENWOOD, SR.

April 1, 1945 ~ May 12, 2019

Lester Greenwood was born to the union of the late James Greenwood and Ida Mae Wright on April 1, 1945 in Waelder, Texas, as the 6th of 8 siblings. Lester grew up on the Eastside of San Antonio, Texas where he attended Dorie Miller Elementary School, Riley Middle School, and Phyllis Wheatley High School, from which he graduated in 1963. He then majored  in Physical Education at St Phillips College in San Antonio, and at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.

Lester met the love of his life, TiaJuana Collins (Tia), at St Phillips College in 1965 and later married her on June 15, 1967, in Seguin, Texas. To their loving union two children were born, a son, Lester Anthony and a daughter, Charisse LaShawn. Later in life he was also blessed with twin grandchildren, Jaeden Anthony and Jada Marie Greenwood.

Lester enlisted in the Army on June 22, 1967. His military assignments included Fort Polk Louisiana, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Carson, Colorado, the Republic of Vietnam, Fort Holabird, Maryland, Darmstadt, Germany, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He served in the Vietnam War from July 1968 to August 1969. His bravery during the Vietnam War earned him a Vietnam Service Medal, a Bronze Star Medal, an Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm (Vietnamese Award). In a weapons proficiency competition with the German Army, Lester was one of a few American Soldiers to earn and be awarded the German Armed Forces Schutzenschnur Marksman Badge. While serving in Germany, he attended and graduated from the prestigious Army Basic Non-commissioned Officer (BNOC) course in Bad Tolz, Germany, and the Equal Opportunity Race Relations Course in Bremerhaven, Germany. As a Race Relations Instructor, he taught courses dealing with race issues to military and civilian personnel. While assigned to the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles) Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he attended Air Assault School and earned the 101st Airborne Air Assault Badge. Lester was medically retired from military service in September 1980.

In May 1981, Lester acquired his Associate of Arts degree in Real Estate Management and began his career as a Realtor in the San Antonio area. In June 1990, he joined his wife when her job transferred to Hanau, Germany. In 1991 he was hired into Federal Civil Service in the Housing Management career field. He retired from Federal Service in May 2008.

Lester’s favorite pastimes were sports, being outdoors, and traveling. He was a born athlete. As a young man he enjoyed body building, basketball, football, and boxing at the Eastside Boys Club. While in the Army he excelled in playing basketball for his Headquarters and Company units while assigned to Fort Holabird, Maryland and to Darmstadt, Germany, averaging 35 points a game. He was an avid fan of the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. Lester was happiest being outdoors doing yard work, and most of all, fishing. He cherished the happy hours he spent fishing with family and friends. Lester had a passion for traveling and he was always ready to travel anywhere. His favorite poem was “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost about taking the road less traveled by. He and his wife, son and daughter traveled extensively to many cities throughout Germany, France, Italy and England during the 17 years he and his wife  lived and worked overseas. His favorite cities were Paris, France and Venice, Italy.

Lester was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend. He was kind hearted and had good-natured personality. He was friendly with everyone. He loved making people happy and was always ready with a smile. One of his goals in life was to say or do something to make someone smile or laugh every day. He succeeded in doing that every day.

God took Lester home to his eternal resting place on Sunday, April 12, 2019. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 51 years, TiaJuana C. Greenwood, his son Lester Greenwood, Jr., his daughter Charisse L. Poynter, his grandson Jayden A. Greenwood, his granddaughter Jada M. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I remember Lester as a good natured man. While I was in high school he dated my sister Tia. He was like an older brother to me from the time I met him.

I remember most of all his kindness, his laughter and his smile, which he seemed to do all the time. And the brother loved good food.

He loved and was a great friend to our father, whom he respectfully called “Sarge”and to our mother whom he called “Mrs. Collins”. He made them laugh often.

He showed his greatest love for his priority in life, my sister and their children. I remember him telling me there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do to ensure they had a good life. I witnessed a lot of his actions in doing so.

I will always be grateful for the time we spent talking, going to jazz concerts and mostly for his dedication to my sister.

You done well, now rest in The Peaceful Embrace of GOD dear brother.

  2. Where do I start? Lester as I write on this tribute wall, I somehow feel like this isn’t real.  I feel like you are still here, and I am waiting for you make me laugh or just tell me you are proud of Harrell and I,  just like you said a week before you went into surgery.  Even though you were not feeling good, you still came over and asked Harrell if he needed any help moving in the new house.  That is the kind of person you are. You care more about other people than you care about yourself. You are a giving man, just like God wants his children to be.  I will miss your smile. I will miss the way you took care of Tia.  You made me feel like we were related,  and I thank you for that.  I am so sad that we were only neighbors for one month, but my goal is to meet you in Heaven when the time comes, and we can talk all about how I let you drive, and take care of my car…lol (our little joke).  My friend you will be missed, and don’t worry about Tia, I will bug her until she lets me help take care of her.  We Love you forever Lester!

  3. Words cannot express how deeply saddened I am to lose my first cousin Lester. Lester was an amazing cousin to me and I feel privileged to have him in my life. He was right there for my mom at the passing of my father; his uncle, when the Lord to him home 9 years ago. This is a moment in time that I will never forget. Lester touched so many lives for the good. Tia, Lester, Jr., Cherice and the twins, Lester loved you all so very much. He made it known. Mom and I will be thinking of you and praying that you have hope in the midst of sorrow and comfort in the midst of pain.
    I love you more❤️

  4. Tia and the entire Greenwood Family there are simply no words to express the loss and heartfelt sympathy we feel. We loved Lester ( our neighbor and friend) and will miss his kindness and infectious smile.
Praying for your strength in the lord.

  5. A family is a bonding of people of the same blood. I was not of the same blood but we were family; through friendship and occupation. I am honored and blessed to have known Lester. Remembering his wonderful and gentle soul will forever remain in my heart. We had so many good times together and my first bite of brisket was from your grill. My family and I will miss you so much my brother. You are so loved by family and friends. Rest In Peace Lester!♥️

  6. Lester, Rest In Peace😢 Tia and the rest of your family are in our prayers🙏🏽🙏🏽

  7. Lester was a wonderful man and a terrific neighbor.  He always had a warm smile and a friendly wave every time I saw him. Cinnabar Court will not be the same without him.  May he be forever in the presence of the Lord and may he rest in peace.

  8. Lester was the first neighbor to welcome us to the Cinnabar Court family. He was a kind and caring person and we will always remember you.  God bless you Lester and you rest in peace.

  18. I am sorry to hear of the untimely passing of my dear Uncle Lester. My heart goes out to all of my family in this difficult time.  Lester Sr was a good man and this world will forever miss him.

  19. Sarge,

To say you are our neighbor just doesn’t quite fit everything you mean to us.  Knowing you were watching over our family and home at all times brought such comfort to our lives.  We will miss our evening talks, laughs about how much rain we aren’t getting (although this year has been a fluke), and watching you smile when those grandbabies were visiting.  We will continue to watch over your family as you have done ours and continue to do from up above.  Tell my dad we said hello and enjoy the love and endless laughter in heaven.  We miss you more than words can say.
