ROBERT TAYLOR, SR.

FAMILY

Robert L. Taylor was born March 11, 1921 in Colorado County, Texas, and was the only child of the late Albert and Gertrude Prince Taylor.

He was married to his lovely wife, Jessie B. Taylor for over sixty-seven years.  They had two daughters, Doris M. Newton and Barbara A. Taylor; and one son, Robert L. Taylor, Jr., who preceded him in death.

EDUCATION

He is a graduate of Phyllis Wheatley High School and St. Philip’s College, San Antonio, TX.  He attended St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, TX, and was credited with 113 semester hours toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Economics.

CAREER

On 12 September 1942 he was inducted into the United States Army.  He served overseas during WWII in the European Theater (France and Germany).  He was honorably discharged 7 January 1942 with the rank of First Sergeant.  He also served on active duty as a Reservist during the Korean Conflict from 20 November 1950 to 20 December 1951 and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant.

He served as a civil servant with the United States Army, Fort Sam Houston, TX and was credited with over thirty-three years on retirement as a Supervisory Military Personnel Management Specialist on 23 April 1976.  Special assignments included member of EEO Committee, EEO Counselor, panel member Board of US Civil Service Examiners, Department of Army and Air Force, San Antonio, TX.  He received eight Outstanding Performance Awards and two Suggestion Awards during his civil service career.

He was employed at St. Philip’s College in February 1977 and retired in January 1987 as a Learning Resources Technician.

COMMUNITY AND RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS

· A MEMBER OF St. Philip’s College Alumni Association and served as treasurer for over ten years.

· A member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 5142.

· A member of Dellcrest Forest Neighborhood Association.

· A member of St. Josephs AME Church, San Antonio, TX for over 20 years.  He served as a Class Leader, member of Trustee Board, and as Church Financial Secretary.

· He joined Jacobs Chapel United Methodist Church in the early 1970’s and was a very active member.  He served as a member of the Finance Committee and as Chairperson of the committee for two different terms.  Chairperson of Church Investment Fund and Scholarship Committee, member of Administrative Council, United Methodist Men, Sunday School, and Thursday Noon Bible Study Group.  He served as Chairperson of Annual Men’s Day Celebration on two occasions.

Robert L. Taylor, Sr. leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Jessie B. Taylor; daughters, Barbara Ann Taylor and Doris M. Newton (Vernon) of San Antonio, TX; granddaughter, Giovanne Neal of Florida; grandsons, Kenneth H. Bee of Austin, TX and William E. Bee (Shirlene) of San Antonio, TX; six great grand children; eleven great-great grandchildren; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.
