CAREY SAM WEATHERSBY, JR.

October 27, 1935 ~ February 9, 2019

Carey Sam Weathersby, Jr. was born October 27, 1935 in Dallas TX to the late Carey and Katie Weathersby Sr.  He was the younger of two children. He graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Southern University.

Carey had an accomplished career starting out as a teacher in Bryan, TX. He later worked as a technical illustrator for ITT Federal Electric at NASA in Clear Lake City, TX for a short period. He also served in the Army Reserves in Germany and Korea, after which he worked for the American Red Cross. In 1970, he married Hazel Wilkinson.  In 1976, the family moved from San Antonio to Northern Virginia for Carey’s new position as a Personnel Specialist at the Pentagon.  He continued the rest of his career with the Federal Government, eventually retiring as a Supervisory Regulatory Analyst at the Department of the Interior in 2009.  During his career, he was a strong advocate for civil rights for minorities. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi.

Carey was a very talented artist. Even as a young child, he gravitated towards creativity and playing instruments.  He eventually focused his skills in the field of Art as evidenced by his technical drawings at NASA, cartoons, other drawings, and paintings.  Later in life, he developed a line of ethnic greeting cards that focused on African Americans. His colorful paintings and unique style continue to grace the Weathersby home.

Carey and Hazel relocated back to San Antonio, TX in July 2017.  He passed away in his home on February 9, 2019 at the age of 83.

He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 48 years, Hazel; his son, Nathan (Chaya), his daughters, Crystal and Brandy; his grandchildren, Darnell and Hodayah; and his sister, Doris, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

  1. You have my condolences. Thankfully we have a wonderful Heavenly Father who is ready to give us the comfort we need during these times of sorrow and distress because he is the god of all comfort as 2 Cor 1:3,4 brings out. Also he promises to bring our loved ones back during the resurrection promised at John 5:28,29. Hope this brings the family and friends a measure of comfort and hope.

Across the miles and finally learning of your loss. It’s been along time since I last saw you all!!! My journey from DOI and Herndon to Michigan caring for aging parents. Now back to DMV.
Sending you my condolences and prayers, which are never too late to receive. God is so good to keep you in his care. February probably seems so distant yet so close.
You’re blessed and having the love of children and memories of Carey.
I enjoyed working with him and admired his dedication to employee and Minority Affairs.
Blessings always. Pray to see you again. In Jesus Name. Amen.
