Carolyn Ann Kavanaugh Phillips was born on March 17, 1950 to Wilbert and Kathryn Kavanaugh in Austin Texas.
She was the firstborn of three daughters. Carolyn accepted Christ at an early age under Pastor John A. Kemple of Mount Ararat Baptist Church. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1968.
She furthered her education at San Antonio College, Our Lady of the Lake University, and Durham Business College. She retired as Probate Court Operations Clerk after 25 years from the Bexar County Courthouse.
Carolyn married Clifton Phillips on April 17, 1971. Moreover, from this Union she had two children LaShawnia Carlene and Monica Essavja. She took great pride in being a mother and wife. She served faithfully beside her husband as Pastor and Wife for 25 years. As First lady, she was instrumental in picking up people along with her husband every Sunday for church, opening up their homes for gatherings, fixing dinners, babysitting children, counseling people and just sharing the love of God.
She was married to the late Pastor Clifton Phillips for almost 33 years until his death.
In the late 1950s, she took piano lessons from Mrs. Cloma Reed and Mrs. Dorsey. She also took organ lessons from Alamo Music Company. She played for Mount Ararat Baptist Church, where she started, St Paul Baptist Church, a gospel choir in Frankfurt Germany and Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Beaumont Texas.
She served faithfully for Joshua House of Worship (J.H.O.W) for over 40 years. She served as part of the Women's Ministry at J.H.O.W, J.H.O.W. Mission, Citywide Mission, and First Vice President of the Christian Fellowship Baptist District Mission.
She was a contact person and gift committee representative for the Citywide Widows with Attitude. She was also a member of San Antonio Interdenominational Ministers Wives and Widows. Moreover, she was former president of the organization for 27 years.
She was preceded in death by her father Wilbert Kavanaugh, her husband Clifton Phillips and son-in-law Kevin Flye. She leaves to cherish her mother Kathryn Gray, daughters LaShawnia Gaitwood (Curtis), Monica Phillips Flye. Her sister's Almetra Hudspeth (Vernon) Annie Jewel Brown, her grandchildren Jerome and Jared Gaitwood, Kaci Barnett and Kevin Flye Jr; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
