Thomas Ellis

Thomas Marvin Ellis was born June 29, 1920 in San Antonio, Texas to Bessie and Thomas A. Ellis. He is the eldest of three siblings who have preceded him in death: Aaron, Bertrand and Mattie.

He graduated from Wheatley High School class of 1936 and furthered his education at St. Phillips College and Sam Houston College.

He joined St. Paul Methodist church on Mother's Day in 1939. He was the first president of the United Methodist Men and was "Man of the Year" in 1973.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and is an original Tuskegee Airman serving overseas in Italy. Activated the 301 st Fighter Squadron in 1942. He is the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation from President Harry Truman, Congressional Gold Medal of Honor from President George Bush and inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame 2009.

He was an avid golfer, a big game hunter, and excellent fisherman and was the leader of the Tom Ellis Quintet.

His beloved wife, Janie precedes him in death. He is survived by his daughter Janice Stallings, granddaughter Melanie(Peter) Benefiel. Five great grand children, Jordan and Joseph Benefiel. Janice Inez, Monica-and Joshua Stallings (children of deceased grandson). Also many wonderful nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
